CHARLESTON, — Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito secured a decisive victory in West Virginia’s Republican Senate primary on Tuesday, defeating five challengers and moving one step closer to another term in the U.S. Senate.
Capito, a two-term senator and the first woman ever elected to represent West Virginia in the Senate, entered the race as the overwhelming favorite. Backed by former President Donald Trump and supported by much of the state’s Republican establishment, her campaign focused heavily on economic development, energy independence, border security, and conservative values.
The victory reinforces Capito’s standing as one of the most influential political figures in West Virginia, a state that has shifted sharply toward Republicans over the past decade. Political analysts had widely expected her to win comfortably, but the margin highlighted the continued strength of Trump-aligned candidates in deeply conservative states.

Her opponents attempted to challenge her from different wings of the Republican Party, but none were able to build enough momentum to seriously threaten the incumbent senator. Trump’s endorsement also played a significant role in consolidating Republican voters behind Capito ahead of the primary.
West Virginia remains one of the strongest Republican strongholds in the country, and Capito now heads into the general election with significant advantages in fundraising, statewide recognition, and party support.
