Chapter 26 - The People Without Shadows

The smiling families walked calmly through Neighborhood Zero.
No one spoke.
No one waved.
No one acknowledged one another.
They simply followed identical routines.
One father collected an imaginary newspaper.
A mother watered flowers that weren't growing.
Children kicked the same red ball across the same lawn.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Rick barked loudly.
Not one person reacted.
The realtor slowly opened the front door.
The nearest man walked directly past us.
Close enough for me to touch.
I reached out.
My hand passed through him.
Like cold mist.
The figure continued walking.
Unchanged.
The elderly woman whispered,
"I remember seeing them when I was little."
"What are they?"
"I thought they were ghosts."
She shook her head.
"No."
"They're recordings."
Every family on the street suddenly repeated the exact same movement.
Simultaneously.
Each looked toward the sky.
Each smiled.
Each returned to what they had been doing.
Like a video caught in an endless loop.
Then the loops began breaking.
One child stopped kicking the ball.
Instead, he turned toward our house.
He looked directly at Rick.
Not at me.
Not at the realtor.
Only Rick.
He slowly raised one hand.
Then pointed toward the end of the street.
Where a single black house stood apart from all the others.
No number.
No mailbox.
No lights.
No windows.
Only a front door painted completely black.
The child opened his mouth.
For the first time, we heard a voice.
"He's awake."
Instantly, every smiling family vanished.
The neighborhood became empty again.
At the far end of the street...
May you like
The black front door slowly opened.
