Chapter 16 - The Offer Mark Never Expected

Nearly an hour had passed.

The apartment had become strangely calm.

Mark sat alone on the sofa.

Emma remained near the window.

Vanessa stood beside Rachel, quietly reviewing documents.

No one wanted to sit beside Mark anymore.

He looked older than when he had arrived.

Not because time had passed.

Because every lie had aged him at once.

Finally he looked at me.

"What do you want?"

The question surprised everyone.

"What?"

"Money?"

"No."

"The apartment?"

"I already have it."

"Revenge?"

I thought carefully before answering.

"No."

He frowned.

"Then why are you doing this?"

I looked around the room.

"I'm not doing anything."

"You've ruined my life."

I shook my head.

"I simply stopped protecting it."

Silence.

Then I walked to the bookshelf.

Inside a drawer was a plain white envelope.

I placed it on the coffee table.

Mark looked confused.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

He did.

Inside was a check.

His eyes widened.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars?"

Emma looked shocked.

Vanessa looked even more confused.

Mark stared at me.

"You... you're giving me money?"

"It's a loan."

Rachel immediately understood.

She smiled but said nothing.

Mark looked hopeful for the first time all evening.

"I knew you'd help."

I interrupted him.

"Read the second page."

He removed another document.

His smile disappeared instantly.

It was a formal loan agreement.

Every condition was clearly written.

Monthly reporting.

Asset disclosure.

No hidden transfers.

No false statements.

Immediate repayment upon breach.

Rachel finally spoke.

"It's legally enforceable."

Mark slowly lowered the papers.

"You don't trust me."

I met his eyes.

"No."

"I never will again."

He placed the documents back into the envelope.

"I can't sign this."

"I know."

He looked surprised.

"Then why offer it?"

"Because now everyone here has seen the difference between us."

Emma frowned.

"What difference?"

I answered quietly.

"When I supported Mark for years..."

"...I asked for nothing."

I looked at the unsigned agreement.

"When he asks for help..."

"...I ask only for honesty."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone in the room already knew...

May you like

...honesty was the one thing Mark could no longer afford.
