Chapter 5: The Legend They Never Recognized

Chapter 5: The Legend They Never Recognized

A wave of whispers swept through the dojo.

"The reason...?"

"What does she mean?"

"I've never heard that name before."

The younger students looked confused, but the older instructors had gone completely silent. Several of them stared at Lena as if trying to remember a face they had seen many years ago.

Coach Ryan forced out a nervous laugh.

"Come on. If she was really that important, everyone would know who she is."

Dana Whitmore slowly turned toward him.

"Everyone who truly studied martial arts does."

Her voice was calm, but every word carried undeniable authority.

"You only know tournament champions. I know the people who changed the sport itself."

Ryan folded his arms.

"So who exactly is she?"

Dana looked back at Lena.

"May I?"

Lena hesitated before giving a small nod.

"If it helps these students understand what martial arts should be... then yes."

Dana faced the class.

"Twenty years ago, martial arts competitions were very different. Many female athletes were treated like entertainment instead of competitors. Prize money was unequal. Training opportunities were limited. Sponsors ignored them."

Several parents exchanged surprised looks.

Dana continued.

"Then a young fighter named Lena Vale appeared."

She smiled faintly.

"She wasn't the tallest."

"She wasn't the strongest."

"But she possessed something almost impossible to teach."

"Perfect control."

Master Grant quietly added,

"And unmatched discipline."

Dana nodded.

"She defeated national champions without humiliating them."

"She bowed after every match."

"She thanked every referee."

"And after every victory..."

"...she always helped her opponent back onto their feet."

The room grew quieter.

One teenage girl whispered,

"That's why Master bowed first..."

Dana smiled.

"Exactly."

"Respect was never something she demanded."

"It followed her naturally."

Ryan's confidence slowly began returning.

"So she was famous twenty years ago."

"That doesn't mean she'd survive against today's fighters."

The sentence hung in the air.

Several instructors looked horrified.

Dana stared at him for a long moment.

"I've met many talented fighters."

"I've met Olympic medalists."

"I've met world champions."

She took one step closer.

"None of them would have said something that foolish."

Ryan frowned.

"You think she could still beat elite competitors?"

Dana answered immediately.

"No."

Ryan smirked.

"I knew it."

Dana finished her sentence.

"I think she'd embarrass them."

The smirk disappeared.

Laughter almost escaped from a few students before they quickly covered their mouths.

Ryan's ears burned.

"This is unbelievable."

Master Grant sighed.

"Ryan..."

"You've spent years believing martial arts begins with your black belt."

"It doesn't."

Ryan refused to listen.

"If she's really that incredible..."

He pointed toward the trophy display.

"...where are all her medals?"

Lena answered before anyone else could.

"I donated them."

Silence.

Ryan blinked.

"What?"

"The medals."

"I gave them away."

"Why?"

"They were collecting dust."

The students stared at her.

Someone who had sacrificed years to become a champion...

...had simply given away every trophy.

Ryan couldn't understand it.

"But why would anyone do that?"

Lena looked around the dojo.

"When people become attached to trophies..."

"...they stop improving."

Master Grant smiled quietly.

"Exactly the answer I expected."

Dana laughed softly.

"She said the same thing during her retirement speech."

Ryan looked confused.

"Retirement?"

"She retired at twenty-six."

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

"So young?"

"Why?"

Dana's smile slowly faded.

"Because of an accident."

Lena lowered her eyes.

The cheerful atmosphere disappeared instantly.

Nobody spoke.

Dana continued carefully.

"She was protecting someone."

"A child."

"During a demonstration."

"The building's lighting equipment collapsed."

"She pushed three children out of the way."

"But..."

Dana stopped.

Master Grant finished quietly.

"She took the impact herself."

The room became painfully silent.

One student whispered,

"Is that why she disappeared?"

Lena nodded once.

"My doctors believed I might never fight again."

Ryan instinctively looked at her posture.

He suddenly noticed something he had completely overlooked.

Very faint scars were visible near her wrist.

Her left shoulder moved slightly differently than her right.

Even now...

She carried permanent injuries.

Yet despite those injuries...

She had effortlessly neutralized him.

Ryan swallowed.

For the first time since becoming an instructor...

He questioned himself.

Not his techniques.

His character.

At that moment, a young assistant instructor hurried through the entrance carrying a tablet.

"Master!"

He looked nervous.

"You need to see this."

Dana accepted the tablet first.

Her expression changed immediately.

"What happened?"

"The security cameras."

"The confrontation earlier..."

Ryan stiffened.

The assistant nodded.

"Someone uploaded the entire incident online."

Several students immediately checked their phones.

Notifications exploded.

Thousands of views...

Then tens of thousands...

The comments multiplied every second.

People weren't praising Coach Ryan.

They were condemning him.

'That coach bullied a maintenance worker.'

'Disgraceful behavior.'

'He should lose his teaching license.'

'Who is the woman that completely outclassed him?'

The video spread across martial arts communities faster than anyone expected.

Dana looked directly at Ryan.

"This isn't just embarrassing."

"This involves the Federation."

Ryan's confidence completely collapsed.

"What... what does that mean?"

Before Dana could answer...

The academy's receptionist rushed inside, breathing heavily.

"Master Grant!"

"What is it?"

"There are reporters outside."

Everyone froze.

"How many?"

She looked through the front windows.

"More than thirty."

"And..."

She hesitated.

"There are television news vans pulling into the parking lot."

Ryan's face turned white.

But then the receptionist added one final sentence that shocked everyone even more.

"They're not here because of Coach Carter..."

May you like

She slowly turned toward Lena.

"They're asking if the legendary 'Ghost of the Dojo' has really returned."
