Chapter 7: The Secret She Tried to Leave Behind

Chapter 7: The Secret She Tried to Leave Behind

A stunned silence swept through the academy.

Every eye was fixed on Lena.

The elderly woman remained in a deep bow, refusing to rise until Lena acknowledged her.

Even Master Grant looked uneasy.

The International Council of Traditional Martial Arts was known for honoring only the greatest living masters. Its members rarely appeared in public, and they certainly did not bow to anyone unless that person had made an extraordinary contribution to martial arts.

Yet here they were...

Bowing to the woman everyone had believed was only a janitor.

Lena stepped forward immediately.

"Please," she said softly. "Stand up."

The elderly woman slowly lifted her head.

"We cannot."

Lena looked puzzled.

"Our council still owes you a debt."

The students exchanged confused glances.

"What debt?"

Ryan whispered under his breath.

"What is she talking about?"

The elderly woman finally stood with the assistance of her cane.

"My name is Naomi Ishikawa," she introduced herself. "Twelve years ago, during the International Masters Exhibition in Kyoto, a terrible accident nearly claimed the lives of several children... and one member of our council."

Dana Whitmore lowered her eyes.

She already knew the story.

Most of the students did not.

Naomi continued.

"The collapsing lighting structure weighed nearly half a ton. There was no time to escape."

She looked directly at Lena.

"Everyone ran away from the falling steel."

"You ran toward it."

The dojo became completely silent.

Naomi's voice trembled.

"You pushed the children clear."

"You shielded our senior master."

"And you took the full impact yourself."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Someone whispered,

"She saved lives..."

Another student asked,

"Then why did she disappear?"

Naomi sighed.

"Because when she finally recovered..."

"...she refused every award we offered."

Lena lowered her eyes.

"I only did what anyone should have done."

Naomi smiled sadly.

"No."

"Very few people would."

Master Grant folded his arms.

"I begged her to return."

"So did dozens of schools."

Lena answered quietly,

"I wasn't ready."

Ryan frowned.

"Ready for what?"

Lena looked at him without anger.

"To teach."

Ryan blinked.

"You were already one of the greatest fighters."

"Fighting isn't teaching."

The sentence hung in the air.

Lena continued.

"When I was younger, I believed perfect technique was enough."

"After the accident..."

"...I realized people don't remember your victories."

"They remember how you treated them."

The youngest students listened carefully.

One little boy slowly raised his hand.

"Miss Lena?"

"Yes?"

"Do you miss competing?"

She smiled warmly.

"Sometimes."

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Lena looked toward the windows where reporters were still gathered outside.

"Because the applause became louder than the lessons."

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

"I started seeing children train because they wanted fame."

"Parents wanted trophies."

"Schools wanted publicity."

"Very few people talked about character anymore."

She gently rested one hand on the mop handle.

"So I chose a quieter life."

Ryan stared at the mop.

"You became... a janitor?"

Lena nodded.

"I became someone who could help without being recognized."

Several students looked around the spotless dojo.

For the first time, they noticed how carefully every corner had been cleaned.

She had always worked with the same precision she had shown on the mat.

Naomi smiled.

"Do you know how we finally found you?"

Lena shook her head.

"The video."

Ryan lowered his face.

Naomi continued.

"Our researchers have searched twelve countries."

"You changed your address."

"You refused interviews."

"You declined every invitation."

"You even stopped using your championship name."

Lena remained silent.

"But yesterday," Naomi said, "someone uploaded a video of a janitor avoiding a black belt's attacks."

She looked toward Ryan.

"It only took our analysts seventeen seconds."

"Seventeen?"

Naomi nodded.

"Your footwork."

She smiled at Lena.

"No one else moves that way."

The students looked at Lena's feet.

Simple.

Relaxed.

Natural.

Nothing flashy.

Yet every movement had been enough.

Master Grant quietly laughed.

"I should have recognized it immediately."

"So should I," Victor admitted.

Ryan remained completely silent.

For the first time in years...

He no longer felt like the strongest person in the room.

He felt like the least mature.

Just then, another black SUV arrived outside the academy.

Then another.

And another.

The receptionist hurried inside once again.

"There are even more visitors."

Naomi frowned.

"We weren't expecting anyone else."

The front doors slowly opened.

Five men entered wearing expensive business suits.

Behind them walked a woman carrying a thick leather folder.

Dana's expression changed immediately.

"I know them."

Master Grant looked surprised.

"The Federation Ethics Committee?"

Dana nodded.

"The entire committee."

The chairman stepped forward and looked directly at Coach Ryan.

His voice was calm but firm.

"Coach Ryan Carter..."

"We are here regarding the formal complaints submitted against your conduct."

Ryan's face drained of color.

"So soon?"

The chairman held up the leather folder.

"There are no fewer than one hundred and eighty-seven signed complaints."

The students gasped.

"Already?"

Dana answered quietly,

"The video has now been viewed over twelve million times."

Ryan's knees nearly gave way.

But before anyone could say another word...

The chairman turned away from Ryan...

Walked directly toward Lena...

And, to everyone's astonishment, offered her the folder with both hands.

"There is one more reason we're here."

Lena looked confused.

"What reason?"

The chairman smiled respectfully.

"The Federation would like to ask whether you would consider returning..."

May you like

"...not as a competitor..."

"...but as the person who rebuilds martial arts from the ground up."
