Chapter 21 - The Ledger of Names

As power slowly returned, lights flickered one row at a time through the enormous archive.

What had seemed endless in darkness now appeared even larger.

Shelves stretched into the distance like a forgotten library.

Each box.

Each folder.

Each photograph.

A different child.

Emily opened another file.

Birth certificate.

Medical examination.

School photograph.

Fingerprint card.

Everything meticulously preserved.

"Why keep all of this?" she asked.

Margaret answered quietly.

"So nobody could ever completely erase them."

Olivia noticed a large leather-bound book resting on a wooden table in the center of the archive.

Its cover carried no title.

Only an embossed golden paw.

Richard immediately walked toward it.

He placed one paw on the cover.

The book clicked.

A hidden clasp released.

Olivia carefully opened the first page.

Every line contained two names.

One child.

One dog.

Anna Collins — Richard.

Michael Reyes — Richard.

Lucy Morgan — Richard.

Thomas Hale — Richard.

Page after page...

The same pattern.

Emily frowned.

"Why is every dog named Richard?"

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

"They weren't replacements."

"They were promises."

Margaret gently touched one of the pages.

"The first Richard never stopped searching for the children who escaped."

"When he died..."

Elizabeth continued,

"...Harold promised that every dog after him would carry the same name."

"So the promise would never die."

Richard rested beside the book.

Almost proudly.

Olivia turned another page.

A loose envelope slipped onto the floor.

Across the front someone had written:

To whoever opens the archive after my death.

Harold's handwriting.

Emily looked toward Margaret.

"We should read it."

Before anyone could reach for the envelope...

Gunfire echoed through the archive ceiling.

Concrete shattered overhead.

Voss shouted from somewhere beyond the shelves.

"You have one minute!"

His voice echoed from multiple directions.

He had separated his men.

"They're surrounding us," Olivia whispered.

Margaret picked up Harold's envelope.

"We're leaving."

"Which way?"

Elizabeth pointed toward a narrow service corridor hidden behind Shelf 93.

"There."

May you like

Richard immediately began running.
