Chapter 3 - The Promise Beneath the Blanket

The following morning began like every other.
Breakfast carts rolled through the corridors.
Doctors discussed laboratory results.
Families gathered outside patient rooms carrying coffee and flowers.
Outside Room 307, nobody stopped.
Harold ate only a few spoonfuls of oatmeal before quietly setting the tray aside.
"I'm not very hungry today."
Richard looked at him.
"I know."
Dr. Emily reviewed the newest test results.
Some numbers had improved slightly.
Others had worsened.
She knew medicine could only do so much.
Hope often depended on something no laboratory could measure.
While changing Harold's blanket, Olivia accidentally noticed an old leather pouch tied beneath the bed frame with a faded blue ribbon.
She frowned.
"Mr. Bennett?"
He looked up.
"Yes?"
"Did you put this here?"
His expression changed instantly.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Almost protectively.
"I wondered when someone would find it."
Olivia untied the ribbon and placed the pouch in his hands.
The leather had cracked with age.
Richard immediately rested his chin on Harold's knee.
The old man gently stroked the dog's ears before opening the pouch.
Inside were dozens of yellowed photographs.
A military medal.
A silver house key.
Several handwritten letters tied together with twine.
And beneath them all lay a sealed envelope with only two words written across the front.
FOR RICHARD.
Olivia blinked.
She looked at the dog.
Then back at Harold.
"You... wrote a letter to him?"
Harold smiled.
"No."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"That letter isn't for the dog you see today."
Olivia stared silently.
Richard slowly lifted his head, almost as though he recognized the name before anyone spoke another word.
Harold carefully closed the envelope again.
"I've carried that promise for over sixty years."
Neither nurse nor doctor interrupted him.
Outside, thunder rolled softly across the distant sky.
The sunlight disappeared behind heavy clouds.
Richard quietly climbed onto the bed once more, placing one paw gently over Harold's hand.
The old man's fingers trembled as they rested on the unopened envelope.
"I think..."
he whispered,
May you like
"...the time has finally come for someone to learn why every dog I've ever loved has been named Richard."
Neither Olivia nor Emily realized that the answer hidden inside that weathered envelope would soon draw strangers, forgotten family members, and even hospital administrators into a mystery that had remained buried for more than half a century.
