Chapter 3: Evidence That Could Destroy an Empire

Chapter 3: Evidence That Could Destroy an Empire

The doors to the emergency maternity unit closed behind me with a heavy metallic sound.

For the first time since Margot's kick, I felt safe.

A team of specialists surrounded my bed with remarkable efficiency. One nurse attached blood pressure monitors while another carefully adjusted the fetal heart monitor. The room filled with soft electronic beeps as everyone focused on one objective—keeping my baby alive.

"Heart rate is stabilizing."

"Blood pressure is elevated."

"No external bleeding."

The lead obstetrician looked directly at me.

"Mrs. Finch, we need to perform an emergency ultrasound immediately. We have to rule out placental abruption."

I nodded silently.

As the cool gel touched my stomach, I couldn't stop trembling.

Every second felt like an hour.

Then...

A tiny heartbeat echoed through the room.

Fast.

Strong.

Beautiful.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

"There," the doctor smiled gently. "Your baby is fighting."

The entire medical team visibly relaxed.

"The heartbeat is reassuring."

"The baby is moving normally."

"There's no obvious internal bleeding."

A nurse squeezed my hand.

"You both are incredibly lucky."

Lucky.

I wasn't sure that was the right word.

Because outside my hospital room, another battle had already begun.

Director Marshall stood inside the hospital's executive conference room.

Around the table sat the Chief of Security, the hospital's legal counsel, the head of patient safety, and two senior police detectives who had arrived less than twenty minutes after the incident.

No one spoke casually.

The atmosphere was deadly serious.

Marshall placed both hands on the table.

"I want every piece of evidence preserved."

The Chief of Security nodded.

"We've already secured recordings from twenty-seven surveillance cameras."

"Any blind spots?"

"None."

"What about witness statements?"

"Thirty-four people have already volunteered."

Marshall looked impressed.

"Thirty-four?"

"More keep coming."

One detective added quietly,

"Several patients refused to leave until they gave official statements."

Another officer placed a folder onto the table.

"Director... we also have cellphone videos."

"How many?"

"So far..."

He opened the folder.

"...eleven."

The room fell silent.

Eleven separate recordings.

From eleven different angles.

There would be no arguing that the assault had been misunderstood.

Meanwhile...

Bennett paced nervously inside a private waiting lounge.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing.

Finally he answered.

"This better be important."

His Chief Financial Officer didn't waste time.

"Our stock is dropping."

"What?"

"Someone leaked that police are investigating an assault involving you and your wife."

Bennett frowned.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

"The story is already spreading through investor chat groups."

Another notification appeared.

Then another.

His assistant sent screenshots.

Billionaire CEO Accused of Ignoring Assault on Pregnant Wife

Hospital Investigation Underway

Police Reviewing Surveillance Footage

Bennett's face turned white.

"This happened less than an hour ago..."

His assistant answered quietly,

"Someone inside the hospital must have informed reporters."

"No."

Bennett shook his head.

"There hasn't been enough time."

He was wrong.

In today's world...

Eleven cellphone videos could travel across the internet faster than any corporate public relations team could react.

Margot sat alone in another waiting room.

For the first time in years, she had no audience.

No admirers.

No Bennett standing beside her.

Only silence.

A female detective entered carrying a tablet.

"Miss Margot Lawson?"

"Yes."

"I'd like to ask you several questions."

"It was self-defense."

The detective didn't respond immediately.

Instead, she turned the tablet around.

A video began playing.

The footage clearly showed Emily standing still.

Then Margot stepping forward.

Then...

The kick.

There was no argument beforehand.

No physical threat.

No attempt by Emily to strike first.

Just a deliberate blow aimed directly at the stomach of an eight-month pregnant woman.

Margot swallowed hard.

"I..."

The detective switched to another recording.

Different angle.

Same event.

Then another.

And another.

Five videos later...

Margot stopped talking altogether.

The detective closed the tablet.

"Would you like to change your statement?"

Margot looked toward the door, hoping Bennett would appear.

He never did.

Back upstairs, I stared quietly at the ultrasound image.

My son stretched one tiny hand as though reaching toward me.

The doctor smiled.

"He seems determined."

"He gets that from his mother."

I laughed softly through my tears.

For the first time in weeks, someone had said something kind to me.

After Bennett filed for divorce, kindness had become rare.

He hadn't simply frozen my accounts.

He had carefully isolated me.

Friends stopped calling.

Business partners suddenly became unavailable.

Even charities where I had volunteered for years quietly removed my name from their boards.

At first I thought everyone had abandoned me.

Later...

I discovered why.

Bennett had privately told them I was mentally unstable.

That I was suffering from pregnancy-related emotional problems.

That I needed "professional help."

He had been preparing to destroy my credibility long before filing for divorce.

If I ever accused him publicly...

No one would believe me.

It had been a brilliant strategy.

Until today.

Because today...

Dozens of complete strangers had watched everything with their own eyes.

They didn't know me.

They didn't owe me anything.

Yet they had chosen to tell the truth.

Late that evening, Director Marshall quietly entered my hospital room.

He looked exhausted, but his eyes carried quiet determination.

"How's my favorite niece?"

I smiled weakly.

"We're both still here."

"Good."

He pulled a chair beside my bed.

"I have something you should know."

"What is it?"

"The police have officially classified today's incident as a felony assault investigation involving a pregnant victim."

I closed my eyes.

It suddenly felt real.

Marshall continued.

"And that's only the beginning."

He slid a thick envelope onto my bedside table.

"What's this?"

"Documents."

I slowly opened it.

Inside were financial reports.

Corporate records.

Property transfers.

Bank statements.

Names I recognized immediately.

I looked up in confusion.

"Uncle..."

"Where did these come from?"

Marshall's expression turned unexpectedly serious.

"I've been investigating Bennett for nearly six months."

My heart skipped a beat.

"What?"

"I never wanted to interfere in your marriage."

He sighed heavily.

"But the moment I noticed unusual donations, suspicious contracts, and illegal pressure involving hospital suppliers..."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"...I started asking questions."

I stared at the mountain of evidence in front of me.

Everything I believed was happening because of a cruel divorce suddenly seemed much bigger.

Much darker.

And as thunder rolled outside the hospital windows, I realized Bennett Finch wasn't just about to lose his marriage.

He was about to lose the empire he had spent twenty years building—because the secrets hidden inside that envelope were powerful enough to bring every part of his carefully constructed world crashing down.
