Chapter 5: The Empire Begins to Collapse

Chapter 5: The Empire Begins to Collapse
At 6:15 the following morning, I woke to the sound of televisions echoing through the maternity ward.
Every screen carried the same breaking headline.
FINCH CAPITAL UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
Another banner appeared moments later.
MULTIPLE EXECUTIVES QUESTIONED AFTER HOSPITAL INCIDENT LEADS TO WIDER PROBE.
The nurses exchanged astonished looks.
One of them quietly lowered the volume, afraid the news might upset me.
Instead, I stared silently at the screen.
Less than twenty-four hours earlier, Bennett Finch had believed he controlled everything.
Now the world was watching his empire crumble in real time.
A gentle knock interrupted my thoughts.
Director Marshall entered carrying breakfast.
"You should eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"You have someone else depending on you."
He glanced toward my stomach.
"Our little fighter needs his mother strong."
I managed a faint smile and forced myself to take a few bites.
For the first time in months, I wasn't eating because someone reminded me to.
I was eating because I finally had a reason to keep fighting.
Across the city, the headquarters of Finch Capital had become a battlefield.
Luxury black sedans lined the street outside the towering glass building.
Television crews gathered behind police barriers.
Employees whispered nervously as investigators carrying sealed evidence boxes entered through the main lobby.
Inside the executive boardroom, Bennett stood before twelve directors.
None of them looked pleased.
The Chairman spoke first.
"Explain."
Bennett remained calm.
"This is being exaggerated."
A woman seated near the end of the table slid a tablet across the polished wood.
"Then explain this."
The screen displayed one of the hospital videos.
Margot's kick.
Emily collapsing.
Bennett standing motionless.
Millions of people had already watched it online.
Comments poured in faster than moderators could remove them.
How could any husband stand there?
She's eight months pregnant!
Boycott Finch Capital!
The Chairman looked directly at Bennett.
"You told us this was a private divorce."
"It is."
"No."
He shook his head.
"It's now a corporate crisis."
Another director opened a financial report.
"Our shares have dropped eighteen percent since the market opened."
Another added,
"Three international partners suspended negotiations."
"Our lenders are requesting emergency audits."
"Our insurance carriers want explanations."
Every sentence felt heavier than the last.
For the first time in his career, Bennett had no response.
At the police headquarters, Detective Elena Brooks walked into an interview room carrying another thick file.
Margot looked exhausted.
She had barely slept.
The detective placed several photographs on the table.
Luxury apartments.
Sports cars.
Designer handbags.
Vacation villas.
"Beautiful collection."
Margot remained silent.
"Purchased with your own income?"
No answer.
The detective slid forward another document.
"We traced the payments."
"They didn't come from gifts."
"They came from companies receiving illegal contracts."
Margot's confidence disappeared completely.
"I didn't know."
"You signed the paperwork."
"I just trusted Bennett."
The detective leaned forward.
"Trust isn't a legal defense."
Margot lowered her head into her hands.
For the first time, she realized Bennett wasn't coming to rescue her.
He was struggling to save himself.
Back at the hospital, my attorney arrived.
Her name was Victoria Hayes.
Unlike the expensive lawyers Bennett usually hired, Victoria carried herself without arrogance.
She shook my hand warmly.
"I've reviewed everything."
"The assault."
"The financial records."
"The divorce filings."
She paused.
"Emily..."
"Your husband made several serious mistakes."
I looked up.
"What kind of mistakes?"
"He assumed fear would keep you silent."
She opened her briefcase.
"Instead..."
She placed three documents onto my bed.
"The court has approved an emergency order restoring your access to marital assets until the divorce is resolved."
I stared at the papers.
"My accounts..."
"Are being unfrozen."
"What about the house?"
"He can't sell it."
"The investments?"
"Frozen."
"The trusts?"
"Under court supervision."
For weeks, Bennett had used money as a weapon.
In one morning, the court had taken that weapon away.
Just before noon, another unexpected visitor arrived.
The Chairman of Finch Capital.
A distinguished man in his seventies entered my room accompanied by two corporate attorneys.
He removed his hat respectfully.
"Mrs. Finch..."
"I'm Arthur Whitmore."
"I know who you are."
He nodded sadly.
"I wish we were meeting under better circumstances."
Director Marshall stood quietly beside my bed.
Arthur continued.
"I came on behalf of the Board."
He handed me an envelope.
Inside was an official corporate statement.
The Board had unanimously voted to suspend Bennett Finch as Chief Executive Officer pending the outcome of multiple investigations.
I read the letter twice.
It hardly seemed real.
Arthur sighed heavily.
"I helped build that company with Bennett's father."
"I watched Bennett grow up."
"I believed he would protect what we created."
His voice grew quieter.
"Instead..."
"He nearly destroyed it."
I asked the question that had haunted me all morning.
"Why are you telling me this personally?"
Arthur looked directly into my eyes.
"Because the Board has finally learned the truth."
"What truth?"
He took a deep breath.
"For years, Bennett claimed you had no interest in the company's charitable foundation."
"He said you wanted nothing to do with children's hospitals."
I frowned.
"That's ridiculous."
"I founded those programs."
"I know."
Arthur smiled sadly.
"We found your original proposals."
"Every children's scholarship."
"Every maternity clinic."
"Every neonatal donation."
"They were all your ideas."
I closed my eyes.
Bennett hadn't only stolen my money.
He had stolen my work.
My reputation.
My compassion.
He had accepted awards for projects I created while slowly erasing my name from every record.
Late that afternoon, the door opened once more.
This time, Bennett himself walked inside.
He looked nothing like the confident billionaire from the previous day.
His tie was missing.
His hair was disheveled.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
Security officers stood outside the room, ensuring he couldn't stay long.
He looked at me in silence.
Then at my stomach.
Finally, he spoke.
"I never wanted this."
I met his gaze without fear.
"No."
"You wanted control."
His shoulders dropped.
"Emily..."
"I can fix this."
I almost laughed.
"You still don't understand."
"It's too late to fix anything."
He took another step closer.
"I'm losing everything."
I looked calmly into the eyes of the man I had once loved more than anyone else.
"No, Bennett."
"You lost everything the moment you stood there..."
"...and watched another woman kick your pregnant wife without lifting a single finger to protect her."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then a nurse quietly entered with an urgent message for Director Marshall.
He read it once before looking at Bennett.
"The grand jury has approved the first round of criminal indictments."
Bennett's face drained of every remaining trace of color.
"Against who?"
Marshall folded the document carefully.
"You."
"And this..."
He looked toward the hospital window, where dozens of reporters were gathering outside.
"...is only the beginning."

As police vehicles pulled into the hospital parking lot below, Bennett finally understood that the empire he had spent decades building wasn't destroyed by one lawsuit, one investigation, or one business mistake.
It was destroyed by a lifetime of arrogance—exposed in a single unforgettable moment when the entire world witnessed the kind of man he truly was.
