Chapter 9: The Man Behind Everything

Chapter 9: The Man Behind Everything

The tactical command room had been established inside the prison administration building less than an hour after Marcus was taken into custody.

Every confiscated phone...

Every ledger...

Every surveillance recording...

Every betting record...

Covered the large conference table.

Officers moved rapidly between computers while forensic specialists photographed every piece of evidence.

Outside, Blackstone Prison remained under complete lockdown.

No one entered.

No one left.

The operation was no longer about an illegal fight club.

It had become something much larger.

...

Kate quietly stepped into the command room.

She had changed out of the prison uniform and into a plain black tactical jacket.

For the first time since arriving at Blackstone, she looked exactly like herself.

The silver-haired director glanced up from a stack of reports.

"You should get some rest."

Kate shook her head.

"Not until I know."

The director sighed softly.

"I was hoping you'd say something different."

"So was I."

He understood immediately.

She wasn't asking about Marcus.

She wasn't asking about the prison.

She was asking about the one name that had haunted her for years.

...

The director opened a thick classified file.

Across the front was stamped in bold red letters:

CONFIDENTIAL

He slid the file across the table.

Kate opened it slowly.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Shipping manifests.

Wiretap transcripts.

And one familiar face.

She froze.

"No..."

The photograph showed an elegant man in his late fifties.

Silver hair.

Tailored suit.

Confident smile.

To everyone else, he was known as billionaire businessman Victor Kane.

To Kate...

He was the man who had stood outside her grandfather's dojo on the last day she ever saw him alive.

She remembered every detail.

The black luxury sedan.

The expensive watch.

The cold eyes.

The brief argument.

And then...

The explosion.

For years, investigators had ruled it an accidental gas leak.

Kate had never believed them.

She looked up.

"It wasn't an accident."

The director slowly shook his head.

"No."

"It was murder."

The room fell silent.

Even the officers nearby stopped working.

Kate closed her eyes.

For years she had carried that suspicion alone.

Now...

It had become fact.

...

The director continued.

"Marcus wasn't the leader."

"He was a recruiter."

"For whom?"

"For Kane."

Kate's jaw tightened.

The director tapped several photographs.

"Blackstone wasn't just a prison."

"It was a distribution hub."

"Illegal gambling profits."

"Money laundering."

"Smuggled weapons."

"Corrupt contracts."

"Everything eventually led back to Victor Kane."

One officer projected a digital map onto the wall.

Red lines connected warehouses, shell companies, offshore accounts, and prison officials.

At the very center...

Victor Kane.

The entire network revolved around him.

...

Rex stood outside the open doorway under armed supervision.

He had voluntarily agreed to cooperate.

"I want to testify."

Every head turned.

The director looked at him carefully.

"Why?"

Rex lowered his eyes.

"I've done terrible things."

"I can't change that."

"But Marcus lied to all of us."

"He said Kane protected everyone."

"He said nobody could touch him."

Rex looked toward Kate.

"I don't want anyone else ending up like me."

Kate studied him for several seconds.

Then nodded.

"Tell the truth."

"Everything."

Rex answered quietly.

"I will."

...

Hours later...

Forensic analysts finally unlocked Marcus's encrypted phone.

One by one, secret messages appeared on the large screen.

Payment instructions.

Prison schedules.

Lists of corrupt officers.

Then...

A final encrypted conversation.

The technician enlarged the screen.

Sender:

V.K.

Message:

"Has the woman been identified?"

Marcus's reply:

"Not yet. She appears harmless."

Another message followed.

"If she interferes..."

"Remove her permanently."

The room became deathly still.

Kate stared silently at the screen.

The order had been sent...

Before the fight.

Before Rex picked up the knife.

Before anyone inside Blackstone realized who she was.

Victor Kane had wanted her dead...

Without even knowing her real identity.

The director slowly closed the laptop.

"That confirms it."

"He suspected someone had entered the prison."

"But he didn't know it was you."

Kate looked out the window toward the prison yard.

"He knows now."

...

As if answering her words, another officer rushed into the room.

"Director!"

"We've got a problem."

"What happened?"

"The financial crimes unit just raided Kane's headquarters."

"And?"

"They were too late."

The officer placed several aerial photographs on the table.

The luxurious estate overlooking the coastline was empty.

Every computer had been removed.

Every hard drive destroyed.

Every vehicle gone.

Security cameras had been ripped from the walls.

The mansion looked abandoned.

Kate quietly examined the photographs.

"He left before they arrived."

The officer nodded.

"Less than thirty minutes earlier."

The director frowned.

"Someone warned him."

Silence filled the room.

Another leak.

Somewhere.

Someone still inside the system...

Was feeding information to Victor Kane.

Which meant the operation wasn't over.

It had only exposed part of the network.

...

The director walked toward the window.

Rain began falling over the prison yard.

He spoke without turning around.

"I can remove you from this assignment."

"No one would question your decision."

Kate answered immediately.

"No."

"You've already done enough."

"No."

"This has become personal."

"It always was."

The director finally faced her.

"You understand what comes next?"

Kate nodded.

"Kane won't hide forever."

"No."

"He'll hunt you."

"I know."

"And if he realizes who your grandfather really was..."

Kate finished the sentence for him.

"He'll try to finish what he started."

The director remained silent for several seconds.

Then he reached into his briefcase and placed a small metal key on the table.

It wasn't a car key.

It wasn't a house key.

It belonged to a private evidence vault.

"Your grandfather left something behind."

Kate stared at the key.

"I thought everything was destroyed."

"So did we."

The director's voice became unusually quiet.

"Until yesterday."

"We finally found it."

Kate slowly picked up the key.

Her hands trembled for the first time in years.

Because she knew exactly what was stored inside that vault.

The truth her grandfather had protected with his life.

And the truth Victor Kane had spent fifteen years trying to erase.

Somewhere beyond the prison walls...

A final chapter was waiting.

One that would determine whether justice...

May you like

Or revenge...

Would define the rest of Kate Walker's life.
