Chapter 13 - Derek Finally Speaks

Hours had passed since the collision.

Derek and Kyle sat separately inside patrol vehicles while officers completed paperwork.

Without warning, Derek requested to speak with Detective Brooks.

The detective entered the vehicle alone.

"I want a deal," Derek said quietly.

Brooks folded his arms.

"You've been demanding money all morning. Now you want my help?"

"They'll kill us."

Brooks remained expressionless.

"Who?"

Derek looked toward the highway as though expecting someone to appear.

"I don't know his real name."

"What do you call him?"

After several seconds of hesitation, Derek whispered only one word.

"Director."

Brooks wrote it down.

"What does Director do?"

"I've never seen his face."

"Then how do you receive orders?"

"Phones."

"Encrypted messages."

"Sometimes envelopes."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Who recruited you?"

Derek swallowed.

"A man called Victor."

"Where is Victor now?"

"I don't know."

Brooks studied Derek's face.

For the first time all day, the scammer no longer looked arrogant.

He looked terrified.

Before Brooks could ask another question, Derek suddenly stopped talking.

His eyes focused on something outside the patrol car.

Brooks turned.

Across the highway, nearly half a mile away, a white delivery van had parked on an overpass.

It remained motionless for only a few seconds.

Then it drove away.

When Brooks turned back, Derek's face had turned pale.

"He knows," Derek whispered.

"Who knows?"

"The Director."

"He always knows."
