Chapter 14 - The Notebook's Missing Page
As evening approached, Walter returned briefly to his damaged sedan to collect a few personal belongings before it was towed.
Among them was the weathered leather notebook he had carried all day.
He opened it absentmindedly while waiting for Brooks.
Something immediately felt wrong.
Walter slowly flipped through every page.
Then again.
One page was missing.
Not torn recently.
Removed carefully years ago.
Walter stared at the empty space for several moments.
Emily noticed.
"What's wrong?"
Walter answered quietly.
"The most important page is gone."
"What was on it?"
"The only complete profile I ever wrote about the man we believed led the original crash ring."
Brooks joined them.
"You never mentioned that."
"I thought the notebook was complete."
Walter looked down again.
"No."
"It was taken."
Emily frowned.
"When?"
Walter closed the notebook.
"I don't know."
"But whoever removed that page knew exactly what they were looking for."
At that exact moment, Brooks' phone vibrated.
A forensic laboratory had finished a rapid examination of fingerprints recovered from the recovered documents.
The report contained dozens of partial prints.
Most belonged to Derek and Kyle.
But one unidentified fingerprint appeared repeatedly.
The same print had also been found on evidence collected twelve years earlier in Walter's final investigation.
Brooks slowly lowered the phone.
He looked at Walter.
"It wasn't just the organization that survived."
Walter met his gaze.
"So did someone who was standing beside its leader."

The realization settled over the three investigators as the last daylight disappeared beyond the highway.
Whatever had begun with a staged collision that morning had now become the reopening of a case everyone believed had ended years ago—and the unseen architect behind it had almost certainly realized that Walter Hayes was investigating once again.
