Chapter 14 - The Founder Vault

"We're leaving."
Robert spoke before anyone else could object.
"We go to Warehouse 19."
Victor immediately disagreed.
"It's a trap."
"Everything is a trap."
Robert looked around at the unconscious prisoners.
"If we stay here, we're trapped anyway."
Marta looked at Mira.
"Will you come?"
The little girl smiled sadly.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"I've never left this room."
Henrik looked around carefully.
"What do you mean?"
Mira pointed upward.
"The room won't let me."
Robert frowned.
"The room?"
Mira touched the wall.
Tiny lights beneath the metal surface began glowing.
"It's alive."
Victor's face lost all color.
"It still has power..."
Marta looked at him.
"What are you talking about?"
"This control room wasn't built by Meridian."
Silence.
"It existed long before we found it."
Henrik laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
Victor shook his head.
"I helped excavate this level."
"The walls weren't poured concrete."
"They were already here."
Robert slowly examined the strange metallic surface.
For the first time, he noticed there were no visible seams.
No bolts.
No welds.
The room appeared carved from a single piece of unknown material.
Mira whispered,
"It listens."
The lights brightened.
Every monitor changed simultaneously.
Instead of warehouse footage...
They displayed childhood memories.
Marta riding a bicycle.
Robert graduating college.
Henrik with his first engineering team.
Victor standing beside Elena thirty years earlier.
Nobody understood.
Mira did.
"It reads people."
Victor stepped backward.
"We need to leave."
Immediately.
A calm mechanical voice filled the room.
"Identity verification complete."
Everyone froze.
"Welcome back...
Original Administrators."
Robert stared upward.
"I'm not an administrator."
The voice ignored him.
"Founder authorization transferred."
All screens turned white.
Then one sentence appeared.
