Chapter 23 - The Fourth Key

The dark-red crystal pulsed once.
Instantly, the blue crystal suspended above the shaft responded.
The ancient rings slowed.
The metallic strands retreated.
Marta felt a sudden emptiness, as though something had been abruptly disconnected from her.
Iris looked toward the Recovery Unit.
"You brought another key."
The lead soldier answered,
"Correction."
"We brought the fourth key."
Silence filled the chamber.
Henrik looked around in confusion.
"There were only three."
Anton slowly shook his head.
"No."
"There were always four."
He pointed toward the four cardinal directions engraved into the ancient platform.
"Blue."
"Red."
"Gold."
"And..."
He stopped.
Marta finished the sentence.
"Black."
The lead soldier nodded.
"The final Keeper was never human."
No one understood.
The soldier opened a second compartment inside the black case.
Instead of another object...
There was an empty socket.
Exactly the same shape as the glowing crystal above the shaft.
Mira stared at it.
"What's supposed to fit there?"
The soldier answered calmly.
"It has already awakened."
Before anyone could react, every light in the chamber suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
Only the blue crystal remained visible.
Then...
A deep voice echoed from beneath the earth.
Not through speakers.
Not through machinery.
Directly through the stone itself.
"So..."
it said,
"After all these centuries..."
"...the Four Keepers have finally found one another."
The blue crystal shattered into thousands of floating fragments.
Each fragment remained suspended in the air.
None of them fell.
In the center of the chamber, where the crystal had been only seconds earlier, a narrow passage slowly opened—descending even deeper than the oldest Meridian maps had ever shown.

From the darkness below came a faint glow.
And the unmistakable sound of someone climbing toward them.
