Chapter 15 - The Notebook Hidden in Plain Sight
The emergency power suddenly failed.
Darkness swallowed the underground level.
Only battery-powered exit lights remained.
Emily heard shouting beyond the opaque glass.
A gunshot echoed somewhere nearby.
Then another.
When the lights returned a few seconds later, everything had changed.
The observation room was empty.
Daniel.
Dr. Hale.
The unconscious woman.
Everyone was gone.
Only a single notebook remained on the hospital bed.
Emily rushed toward it.
The electronic lock on her door had released during the power outage.
She crossed into the operating room and grabbed the notebook.
The cover was plain black leather.
Inside, every page was handwritten.
Not by Daniel.
By Emily.
At least... it looked like her handwriting.
The first page carried a date from six years earlier.
A date she could not remember.
The entry read:
If you're reading this, the memory procedure failed again. Do not trust your own timeline. They changed more than names. They changed events.
Emily turned the next page.
Each entry described conversations she had no memory of having.
Meetings with Daniel.
Arguments with Dr. Hale.
Research notes about a classified neurological project.
One sentence had been underlined three separate times.
Memories can be edited, but instincts survive. If I forget everything, I must follow the notebook instead of my own mind.
Emily's hands trembled.
The final page contained only a map.
A red circle marked an abandoned railway station outside the city.
Beneath it, a single instruction had been written.
Locker 19 contains the original recording. Watch it before you believe anyone—including me.
Before Emily could study the map further, footsteps echoed from the corridor.
Not one person.
Several.
Flashlights swept across the walls.
A voice shouted,
"Search every room!"
Emily quickly hid behind the operating table, clutching the notebook against her chest.
The footsteps drew closer.
Then she heard a familiar voice giving orders.
It sounded exactly like Daniel.
