Chapter 22 - The Black Ledger

An alarm echoed through the laboratory.
A mechanical voice announced:
Containment breach. Archive relocation initiated.
Steel rails emerged from beneath the floor.
Dozens of black storage cases began moving automatically toward another section of the underground complex.
Sarah pointed at them.
"The archive is leaving."
Emily noticed one case was different.
Matte black.
No identification.
No barcode.
Only a small engraved symbol resembling an eye.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
"The Black Ledger."
Emily frowned.
"What's inside?"
"Every identity they've ever created."
Sarah nodded.
"Names."
"Faces."
"Medical records."
"Financial histories."
"Entire lives."
Emily watched the case disappear along the automated rail.
"If someone controlled that..."
"They could erase anyone," Daniel finished.
"...or create someone who never existed."
Without warning, the laboratory doors burst open.
Armed security officers entered from both sides.
None wore hospital uniforms.
None displayed badges.
Only black tactical equipment.
Their leader removed his helmet.
Emily expected another stranger.
Instead...
It was Officer Mason.
The detective who had questioned them after the bakery shooting.
He calmly raised his weapon.
"I've finally found all of you."
Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Emily.
Officer Mason smiled.
"Still protecting her?"
"You know who she is."
"I know exactly who she is."
He looked directly at Emily.
"But I wonder..."
"...do you?"
Before Emily could answer, Officer Mason lowered his weapon.
Then he turned around and shot one of his own men.
May you like
Chaos erupted.
