Chapter 18 - Before They Fell in Love

The recording resumed after several seconds of silence.
Daniel looked into the camera.
"If anyone besides Emily finds this file, destroy it immediately."
He turned toward the younger Emily.
"We still have time to cancel."
She shook her head.
"No."
"What if the memory collapse becomes permanent?"
"Then future me deserves the truth."
The video skipped ahead.
Calendar dates flashed across the screen.
Week after week.
Month after month.
Emily watched herself become increasingly exhausted.
New entries appeared.
Trial 4 – Partial Memory Drift
Trial 7 – Identity Fragmentation
Trial 12 – Emotional Retention Successful
Then came the final recording.
The laboratory lights flickered.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Dr. Hale entered the room carrying several folders.
"You've hidden the data," he accused.
The younger Emily stood between Hale and the computer servers.
"I destroyed it."
"You copied it."
"No."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You'll never find it."
Hale smiled.
"I don't need the research."
He looked directly at Emily.
"I only need the scientist."
The screen froze.
A loud electronic tone filled the laboratory.
Then the recording ended.
Emily remained standing in silence.
Everything she believed about her life had shifted again.
She had not simply become involved in someone else's conspiracy.
She had helped create it.
Her attention shifted to a metal cabinet beside the monitor.
It stood slightly open.
Inside were dozens of storage drives labeled with handwritten dates.
One label caught her eye.
Original Memory Archive – Emily Carter
As she reached for it, the laboratory lights suddenly went dark.
Someone had shut off the power.
Footsteps echoed behind her.
A flashlight beam illuminated the doorway.
"Don't touch that drive."
Daniel's voice.
May you like
But Emily no longer knew which Daniel had found her.
