Chapter 1 - A Jar Full of Promises

The late afternoon sun cast long golden shadows across the children's wing of St. Gabriel Medical Center. Nurses hurried quietly through the corridors, speaking in soft voices that somehow made the silence feel even heavier. Every room carried its own story, but Room 214 had become one that none of the staff could forget.

Seven-year-old Ethan Parker lay against a stack of pillows, his breathing slow but steady. Tubes surrounded him, monitors blinked beside his bed, yet his attention never drifted toward any of them. Instead, his eyes remained fixed on the old golden retriever curled faithfully against the side of his hospital bed.

Buddy hadn't left Ethan's side in three days.

Hospital policy normally prohibited animals, but every doctor who witnessed the bond between the two quietly agreed to make an exception.

Buddy seemed to understand.

Whenever Ethan coughed, Buddy lifted his head.

Whenever Ethan smiled, Buddy's tail gently tapped the floor.

They had become each other's entire world.

Outside the room, Dr. Melissa Carter studied Ethan's latest scans with growing concern.

The treatments were no longer slowing the illness.

She sighed deeply before placing the chart back into its folder.

"There isn't much time."

Those words echoed painfully through the hallway.

Inside the room, Ethan slowly reached beneath his blanket and pulled out a small glass jar.

Coins clinked softly against the glass.

Pennies.

Nickels.

A few quarters.

Every birthday gift.

Every allowance.

Every coin found beneath couch cushions or inside old jacket pockets.

His entire savings.

He looked toward Buddy before whispering,

"I wish it were enough."

Buddy rested his head gently across Ethan's blanket as though trying to comfort the little boy instead.

A knock interrupted the silence.

A volunteer stepped inside.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

Forty-two years old.

Former firefighter.

Recently widowed.

He had begun volunteering at children's hospitals simply because sitting alone at home had become unbearable.

He smiled warmly.

"Mind if I keep you company for a while?"

Ethan nodded.

Daniel noticed Buddy first.

Then the jar.

Then the sadness hidden behind Ethan's brave smile.

After several minutes of talking about dogs, baseball, and cartoons, Ethan suddenly pushed the jar toward Daniel.

"I've been saving this."

Daniel smiled.

"That's impressive."

Ethan slowly shook his head.

"It's for Buddy."

Daniel frowned.

The little boy swallowed hard before speaking the words that would change both of their lives forever.

"Please... take my dog."

The room fell silent.

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

"When I'm gone..."

Ethan paused, struggling to breathe evenly.

"My stepdad says Buddy is useless."

Another pause.

"He said he'll drive him somewhere far away."

Daniel stared at the child.

"He promised nobody would ever find him."

Tiny tears rolled down Ethan's cheeks.

"I don't want Buddy to wait for me forever."

Daniel felt something inside him shatter.

The jar trembled slightly as Ethan pushed it closer.

"I know dogs cost money."

Daniel looked down at the handful of worn coins.

It wasn't money.

It was love.

Years of love.

Every coin represented another attempt by a little boy to protect his best friend.

Daniel slowly wrapped both hands around the jar but gently pushed it back.

"You keep this."

Ethan looked confused.

Daniel knelt beside the bed until they were eye level.

"I don't need your money."

The little boy whispered,

"Then... you'll still take him?"

Daniel looked directly into Buddy's gentle brown eyes before returning his gaze to Ethan.

"I give you my word."

For the first time that entire week...

Ethan smiled.

Neither of them realized someone had been standing outside the partially opened door.

May you like

Listening to every word.

And quietly pressing the record button on her phone.
