Chapter 5 - The Key Beneath the Leather

Daniel waited until Ethan had fallen asleep before examining the collar again.
Laura stood near the window, wrapping her arms around herself while rain began tapping against the glass. Buddy remained beside the bed, but his eyes followed Daniel’s hands with strange awareness.
The tiny key was flat and silver.
No number.
No markings.
Only a small triangular symbol engraved near the top.
Olivia entered quietly and closed the door behind her.
“Security confirmed Victor left the building.”
Laura looked unconvinced.
“He always comes back.”
Daniel held up the key.
“Do you recognize this?”
Laura stepped closer.
Her face lost color immediately.
“I’ve seen that symbol.”
“Where?”
She looked toward Ethan before answering.
“My husband’s office.”
Daniel frowned.
“Ethan’s father?”
Laura nodded.
“Michael worked as an accountant for a private medical foundation. He handled donations, hospital contracts, and research funding.”
Dr. Carter, who had been reviewing Ethan’s chart near the doorway, slowly looked up.
“Which foundation?”
Laura hesitated.
“The Harrison Children’s Trust.”
The doctor’s expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“You know it?”
Dr. Carter closed the folder.
“They funded part of Ethan’s treatment.”
Laura turned sharply.
“What?”
“The payments began anonymously eight months ago.”
Laura looked completely stunned.
“I never applied for assistance.”
“No one knew who authorized it,” Dr. Carter said. “The administration assumed it came from a donor connected to your husband.”
Daniel examined the triangular symbol again.
“What happened before Michael died?”
Laura’s breathing became uneven.
“He started acting afraid.”
She explained that Michael had begun coming home late, checking windows, and hiding documents around the house. He repeatedly warned her never to trust anyone from the foundation.
Then, one rainy night, his car went off a bridge.
Police called it an accident.
Victor appeared in Laura’s life several months later.
Helpful.
Patient.
Supportive.
At first.
Daniel looked toward Buddy.
“Was the dog with Michael that night?”
Laura nodded.
“Buddy was found miles from the crash.”
“Wearing this collar?”
“Yes.”
Olivia slowly lowered herself into a chair.
“Then Michael may have hidden the key before he died.”
A small voice interrupted them.
“He did.”
Everyone turned.
Ethan’s eyes were open.
He had been listening.
“My dad told me Buddy would remember where to go.”
Laura rushed beside him.
“Sweetheart, what do you mean?”
Ethan swallowed painfully.
“He showed me a red door.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan closed his eyes, trying to remember.
“There was a bell.”
“A church?”
Ethan shook his head.
“A train.”
The adults exchanged confused glances.
Then Ethan added one final detail.
“Dad said the key opens a box with my name on it.”
Outside the room, a shadow moved past the small window in the door.
By the time Olivia opened it, the hallway was empty.
But on the floor sat a folded piece of paper.
