Chapter 23 - The Awakening

The sound began as a distant shuffle.

Then it became hundreds of synchronized footsteps echoing through the underground corridors.

Daniel forced himself back onto one knee despite the burning pain racing through his veins. Dark lines still glowed faintly beneath his skin before slowly fading.

Dr. Carter steadied him.

"You shouldn't even be conscious."

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

"How is he?"

She glanced at the monitors.

"His heartbeat is stable for the first time in weeks."

Laura knelt beside her son, tears streaming freely as she brushed a hand across his forehead.

"His fever is gone."

Buddy stood between Ethan's chamber and the approaching corridors, his ears raised, his body tense.

Emily's voice came through the emergency receiver.

"They're coming from every level."

Marcus answered moments later.

"I can see them."

The first children appeared.

Some looked no older than eight.

Others appeared to be in their twenties.

Every one of them wore identical white medical clothing.

None spoke.

None ran.

They simply walked toward the Core with calm, expressionless faces.

Michael stared in disbelief.

"They shouldn't be awake."

Adrian Harrison folded his hands behind his back.

"They've waited long enough."

Emily entered the chamber from the eastern corridor with Marcus close behind.

She stopped immediately upon seeing the approaching group.

"I know some of them."

A teenage boy stepped forward.

His eyes met Emily's.

Recognition slowly replaced the emptiness.

"Emily..."

Her voice trembled.

"Jacob?"

He nodded once.

"They told us you died."

"They told me the same about all of you."

One by one, more faces began recognizing Emily.

Confused whispers spread through the chamber.

"Emily..."

"She's alive..."

"What happened?"

For the first time in years, uncertainty appeared across Adrian's face.

The awakening wasn't unfolding exactly as he expected.

Daniel noticed.

"They're remembering."

Michael looked toward the central machine.

"The conditioning is breaking."

Adrian immediately pressed several commands on a nearby control panel.

Large screens surrounding the Core illuminated.

Rows of medical data flashed rapidly.

"No..."

Emily slowly turned toward him.

"You never wanted us awake."

"I wanted obedient subjects."

Jacob looked around at the others.

"What did he call us?"

Emily answered quietly.

"Subjects."

The word echoed across the chamber.

Not children.

Not patients.

Subjects.

Something changed in their expressions.

Confusion became anger.

May you like

And Adrian Harrison took one slow step backward.
