Chapter 13 - The Truth Buried in Old Photographs

Detective Bennett spread dozens of photographs across the conference table.
Some came from Michael's family albums.
Others had been recovered from Daniel's abandoned warehouse.
At first glance they appeared unrelated.
Different years.
Different cities.
Different people.
But forensic analyst Kevin Rhodes noticed something unusual.
"Zoom in on the backgrounds."
One by one the images were enlarged.
In nearly every photograph...
The same man appeared.
Never in the center.
Always in the distance.
Walking past a shop.
Standing near a parked car.
Reading a newspaper.
Watching.
Michael stared in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
The analyst highlighted fifteen separate images.
The man had followed Michael's family for over twenty years.
Sometimes with a beard.
Sometimes clean-shaven.
Sometimes wearing glasses.
Different hairstyles.
Different clothes.
Always the same face.
"He was at my college graduation."
Another photograph.
"He was outside our wedding."
Another.
"He was at the hospital when Ethan was born."
Michael's breathing became shallow.
"This can't be coincidence."
"It isn't," Bennett replied.
She opened another evidence folder.
Inside lay an enlarged copy of one final photograph.
It had been taken thirty years earlier.
Michael's father stood beside his mother.
Behind them...
The very same man smiled directly at the camera.
Only this time...
He wasn't hiding.
He was standing with the family.
Michael slowly looked toward Detective Bennett.
"Who is he?"
The detective placed a recently recovered fingerprint report on the table.
"We finally have his identity."
Everyone waited.
She took a slow breath.
"His legal name is not Daniel Cross."
Michael leaned forward.
"Then who is he?"
Bennett met his eyes.
"We believe..."
"...he is your uncle."
The room fell completely silent.
But before anyone could ask another question, Bennett's phone vibrated.
A patrol officer spoke urgently on the other end.
Her expression changed instantly.
"They've found Emily."
Michael stood up.
"Where?"
May you like
"She walked into a police station..."
"...and she's asking to confess to a crime committed twenty years ago."
