Chapter 5 - Minutes Before the Door Broke Open

The note was photographed and sent to Michael while he waited near the departure gate.
It contained only eight words.
Michael, if Daniel returns, do not trust the police.
He read the sentence until the screen blurred.
Detective Bennett called again.
“Do you recognize the handwriting?”
“It looks like Emily’s.”
“We’ll have it examined.”
Michael glanced around the crowded terminal.
Travelers moved past him carrying coffee, luggage, and ordinary problems.
He felt separated from all of them.
“Why would my wife write that?”
“We hoped you could tell us.”
“I can’t.”
“Did Emily ever express fear of law enforcement?”
“No.”
“Did she ever say someone was watching your family?”
Michael remembered small things he had dismissed.
Emily checking the locks twice before bed.
Emily closing the curtains before sunset.
Emily refusing to let Ethan play near the basement stairs.
Once, six months earlier, she had panicked when a gray car remained parked across the street for several hours.
She claimed it reminded her of someone.
Michael had laughed gently and told her she was tired.
Now the memory made him feel sick.
“There were moments,” he admitted. “But she never explained.”
Detective Bennett asked him to describe them.
As he spoke, another message appeared on his phone.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Michael opened it.
The image showed Ethan sitting in the back seat of a police vehicle, wrapped in a blanket.
The photograph had been taken from outside the car.
Only minutes earlier.
A second message followed.
Your son was never the target.
Michael stood so quickly that the people beside him turned.
He called Detective Bennett.
“Someone just sent me a picture of Ethan.”
“What number?”
He read it aloud.
She told him not to respond.
“Where is he now?” Michael demanded.
“He’s being transported to your mother’s house.”
“Change the route.”
“We’re already doing that.”
“You said he was safe.”
“He is protected.”
“They’re watching him!”
Detective Bennett gave instructions to officers while keeping him on the line.
Then Michael received another message.
The next photograph showed Emily being moved through a hospital corridor.
Again, taken from a distance.
The message beneath it said:
Ask your wife what happened on October 14.
Michael searched his memory.
October 14 was their wedding anniversary.
But the year was not included.
He typed back before the detective could stop him.
Which year?
The reply came immediately.
The year your son was born.
Michael’s hands trembled.
Ethan had been born six weeks early after Emily disappeared for nearly an entire day. She claimed her car had broken down on a rural road and she had lost her phone.
Michael had believed her.
At the time, there was no reason not to.
The boarding announcement sounded above him, but he barely heard it.
Another message arrived.
Daniel is trying to protect her.
Michael stared at the screen.
Then who hurt her?
The answer appeared after several seconds.
The same man who has been living beneath your home.
Michael’s blood turned cold.
Detective Bennett was still speaking through the phone.
“Mr. Turner, do not contact that number again.”
Michael looked toward the gate.
“I’m getting on the plane.”
“You need to know something before you do.”
“What?”
“We searched the basement.”
“And?”
“We found a room behind the boiler system.”
Michael waited.
“There were monitors inside.”
“Security monitors?”
“No.”
Her voice became quieter.
“Live cameras.”
Michael could barely breathe.
“From where?”
“Your kitchen. Your hallway. Ethan’s room.”
May you like
The final words struck hardest.
“And one camera was pointed at the inside of your bedroom door.”
