Chapter 18 - The Final Confrontation Begins

The oldest photograph remained on the evidence table while no one in the room spoke.

Michael stared at the image until his vision blurred.

The date stamp in the lower corner matched his birth certificate exactly.

The maternity ward.

The same hospital.

The same room where his mother had given birth.

His father, James Turner, stood proudly beside the bed.

But another man stood only a few feet away.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't looking at the baby.

He was looking directly into the camera.

Detective Bennett slid another photograph beside it.

"Same man."

This picture had been taken seven years later at Michael's first day of school.

Again, the stranger appeared in the background.

Another photograph.

Michael's college graduation.

The same man.

Another.

Michael proposing to Emily beside the lake.

The stranger sat alone on a distant park bench.

"He followed me my entire life," Michael whispered.

"For as long as we can verify," Bennett replied.

Officer Ramirez rushed into the conference room carrying a laptop.

"We've recovered files from one of the hidden tunnel computers."

The screen displayed hundreds of folders.

Each folder was labeled with a year.

1988.

1989.

1990.

The collection continued without interruption until the present day.

Every year contained photographs.

Audio recordings.

Handwritten reports.

Medical documents.

School records.

Employment histories.

Michael's entire life had been documented.

"So has Emily's," Ramirez added quietly.

Bennett opened another folder.

It was labeled simply:

SUBJECT E.

Thousands of files appeared.

Emily playing in a schoolyard.

Emily entering university.

Emily meeting Michael for the first time.

Emily on their wedding day.

Every stage of her life had been recorded.

Michael looked horrified.

"This wasn't surveillance."

Bennett nodded.

"It was observation."

"What's the difference?"

"The observer wasn't just watching."

"They were measuring."

"For what?"

Nobody answered.

Then another encrypted folder appeared.

Its title contained only one word.

SUCCESSOR.

The password prompt appeared before anyone could open it.

At the bottom of the screen, a timer suddenly began counting backward.

Ten minutes.

Nine minutes.

Eight minutes.

"Someone activated a remote security system," the technician shouted.

"If we fail to stop it..."

The monitor flashed red.

May you like

ALL FILES WILL BE PERMANENTLY ERASED.
