Chapter 23 - The Passenger in Black

The distant headlights grew brighter.
A low mechanical hum echoed through the underground station.
Richard motioned everyone behind a concrete support column.
Within moments, another maintenance cart rolled silently into view.
Unlike the abandoned vehicle beside them, this one looked recently serviced.
Its driver wore a long black coat and leather gloves.
The cart stopped exactly beneath an old platform clock.
The driver stepped out.
Tall.
Calm.
Face hidden beneath a dark hat.
Without speaking, the stranger unlocked a steel cabinet mounted on the wall.
Inside were dozens of sealed envelopes.
He selected only one.
Then turned as though sensing Richard's presence.
No words were exchanged.
The stranger simply smiled.
Not warmly.
Knowingly.
Richard stepped into the open.
"Who are you?"
The man tilted his head.
"I've been expecting you."
Daniel instinctively moved closer.
"You know Mr. Morgan?"
The stranger ignored the question.
Instead he looked directly at Richard.
"You've already opened the Silver Ledger."
Richard's expression hardened.
"How do you know that?"
"Because it activated."
"You've been watching us."
"I've been waiting."
Richard took another step.
"Are you Meridian?"
The man laughed softly.
"No."
"I've spent my entire life running from Meridian."
Silence filled the platform.
The stranger removed his gloves.
A faded scar crossed the back of his right hand.
Richard stared.
He knew that scar.
Years ago, one of his closest construction engineers had suffered an accident while welding steel beams during the hotel's foundation work.
Richard himself had driven him to the hospital.
His name surfaced from memory.
"Michael..."
The stranger smiled.
"You finally remembered."
Daniel looked confused.
"I thought he died."
"So did everyone else."
Michael slowly handed Richard the envelope.
Across its front were five handwritten words.
Only Open After Meeting Me
Richard carefully broke the seal.
Inside lay a faded train ticket.
Departure Station:
Morgan Central Line.
Destination:
Station Thirteen
Daniel looked around.
"There is no Station Thirteen."
Michael met Richard's eyes.
"There wasn't..."
He glanced toward the dark tunnel stretching beyond the tracks.
"...until tonight."
Far in the distance, another train horn echoed through the underground network.
This one sounded far larger than a maintenance cart.
Richard folded the ticket carefully.
May you like
Without another word, he stepped toward the waiting railway.
Behind them, the countdown clock hidden deep inside the operations center continued moving relentlessly toward zero.
