Chapter 8 - The Hallway of Forgotten Names

Richard, Daniel, and the others stepped cautiously through the steel doorway. The air inside the hidden passage was cold and dry, carrying the faint smell of dust and old paper. The corridor stretched much farther than Richard remembered from the construction years. Someone had renovated it long after he ordered it sealed.
Rows of industrial lights flickered overhead, illuminating walls completely covered with photographs, newspaper clippings, employee ID cards, blueprints, handwritten notes, and surveillance images dating back decades.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"Someone has been documenting everything."
Richard slowly approached the nearest board.
Every hotel general manager since the grand opening appeared on the wall.
Some faces had green circles.
Others had red X marks.
Several names had detailed notes beneath them.
Promoted.
Transferred.
Dismissed.
Paid.
Silenced.
Richard's breathing slowed.
This wasn't random.
Someone had been studying the hotel's leadership for years.
Further inside, another wall displayed ordinary employees.
Bellmen.
Housekeepers.
Receptionists.
Engineers.
Kitchen workers.
Beside many photographs were handwritten comments.
"Loyal."
"Can be trusted."
"Financial problems."
"Easy to manipulate."
"Never ask questions."
Daniel felt sick.
"Someone has been profiling everyone."
Richard continued deeper.
Near the end of the hallway stood a massive blueprint of the hotel.
It wasn't the version used by management.
Entire sections had been added.
Secret corridors.
Hidden elevators.
Observation rooms.
Maintenance tunnels that officially did not exist.
Someone had transformed the building into a maze hidden beneath its luxurious image.
Maria, who had quietly followed despite Richard's instructions, pointed toward one corner.
"Mr. Morgan..."
Richard turned.
There was a photograph of him.
Taken only hours earlier.
Standing outside the hotel before security stopped him.
Below the picture someone had written:
Subject returned earlier than expected. Continue Observation.
Daniel looked around nervously.
"They've been watching us since before you arrived."
Richard remained calm.
"No."
He pointed toward another camera mounted high in the ceiling.
"They've been watching much longer than that."
The small red recording light blinked once.
Then disappeared.
Somewhere in the darkness...
Someone was watching live.
Without warning, every light in the hallway shut off simultaneously.
Complete darkness surrounded them.
A calm male voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Welcome back, Mr. Morgan."
Richard recognized the voice.
Not because he knew the man.
May you like
Because twenty years earlier...
He had personally hired him.
