Chapter 7 - The Door Beneath the Hotel

Daniel led Richard through the staff corridors despite the warning on the screen.

The manager followed behind them.

Richard turned sharply.

“I was told to come alone.”

“That could be a trap,” Daniel said.

“It is almost certainly a trap.”

“Then you should not go.”

Richard continued walking.

“For twenty years, I have waited for someone to make a mistake.”

They descended through the service staircase, passing kitchens, laundry rooms, and mechanical levels rarely seen by guests.

The polished luxury above disappeared.

Walls became concrete.

Pipes ran overhead.

The air smelled of dust and old metal.

Daniel used his phone as a flashlight when several basement lights failed.

The hotel blueprints did not show the corridor from the video. Richard navigated from memory.

“At the end of construction, we found an older foundation beneath the property,” he explained. “Part of a bank building destroyed decades before.”

“Why seal it?”

“Because the tunnels were unstable.”

Richard did not mention that Jonathan had once been fascinated by those tunnels.

As a teenager, he had explored them despite repeated warnings.

They reached a rusted gate.

A modern electronic lock had been installed beside it.

Daniel frowned.

“This system is new.”

Richard placed his founder key card against the reader.

Access denied.

He tried again.

PROJECT CROWN AUTHORITY REQUIRED.

Footsteps echoed somewhere behind them.

Daniel turned.

No one was visible.

Richard examined the gate.

“Someone has been using this area without appearing on official plans.”

The manager’s voice suddenly came through Daniel’s radio.

“Daniel, return upstairs immediately.”

Daniel pressed the button.

“We’re below level four.”

Static answered.

Then the manager spoke again, but his tone was different.

Lower.

Colder.

“Do not let Richard reach the steel door.”

The radio went silent.

Daniel stared at Richard.

“Was that really him?”

Richard did not answer.

He struck the old lock plate with the metal end of his cane.

The casing cracked open, revealing a bundle of recently installed wires.

Daniel pulled an emergency tool from his belt and disconnected the power feed.

The gate released with a heavy click.

Beyond it lay the corridor from the video.

The steel door waited at the far end.

Fresh muddy footprints marked the floor.

Richard walked forward slowly.

Halfway down the corridor, he saw something lying near the wall.

His old black-and-white photograph.

The same photograph he had left upstairs on the ballroom table.

On the back, someone had written a message in red ink.

YOUR SON DISCOVERED WHAT THE HOTEL WAS REALLY BUILT TO HIDE.

Daniel read it over his shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked toward the steel door.

Before he could answer, three locks disengaged from the other side.

The door opened several inches.

Cold air escaped from the darkness beyond.

Then came the faint sound of an old telephone ringing somewhere underground.

Richard stepped closer.

The ringing stopped.

A man’s recorded voice emerged from a hidden speaker.

Richard recognized it immediately.

It was Jonathan.

“Father, if you are hearing this, then they finally allowed you to find the first door.”

Richard’s face went pale.

The recording continued.

“But this is not where the secret begins.”

A light turned on deep inside the tunnel.

It revealed dozens of hotel employee files pinned across the walls.

At the center was a recent photograph of Richard entering the lobby that morning.
