Chapter 2 - The Impossible Reading

Chief engineer Martin Cole stared at the green light.
“That indicator wasn’t active before,” one technician whispered.
Director Crane pointed angrily at Ethan.
“Remove him from the hangar before he causes more damage.”
Two security guards approached, but Martin raised his hand.
“Wait.”
He moved toward the diagnostic console and restarted the internal scan. The screen flickered as lines of data began moving across it.
Ethan stood quietly beside his toolbox.
The first pressure reading appeared.
NORMAL.
Then the fuel control system passed.
The vibration monitor passed.
The turbine alignment test passed.
One by one, the warnings that had covered the screen vanished.
Martin leaned closer, certain the computer was malfunctioning.
“Run the scan again.”
A technician repeated the test.
The same results appeared.
The engine that had been declared beyond repair now showed no critical failure.
Murmurs spread through the hangar.
Director Crane’s expression changed from anger to confusion.
“What did he do?”
Martin walked toward Ethan.
“What exactly did you touch?”
“The secondary vibration assembly,” Ethan replied. “The retaining pin had rotated.”
Martin frowned.
“That pin cannot rotate. It has a locking collar.”
“Not on this engine.”
Martin glanced toward the open technical manual.
“This model uses the reinforced collar.”
Ethan shook his head.
“The newer models do. This engine was rebuilt seven years ago with an older assembly. The replacement part looks almost identical, but the locking grooves face the opposite direction.”
Several engineers exchanged uncertain looks.
Martin quickly searched the engine’s maintenance history. After several seconds, he found an archived repair report.
His face became pale.
The engine had indeed received an older vibration assembly during an emergency overhaul seven years earlier.
“How did you know that?” Martin asked.
Ethan looked toward the turbine.
“The wear marks were backwards.”
Director Crane stepped forward.
“You expect us to believe a twelve-year-old identified something that twenty trained engineers missed?”
Ethan did not react to the insult.
“You were looking for a broken part,” he said. “The part wasn’t broken. It was sending the wrong signal.”
Martin ordered the team to conduct a controlled ignition test.
The hangar doors opened. Fire crews moved into position. Technicians cleared the area as the engine was connected to an external power unit.
Ethan was escorted behind a safety barrier.
A deep mechanical hum filled the hangar.
The turbine began turning slowly.
Then faster.
The engine roared to life.
Workers covered their ears as the powerful sound shook the floor. Every diagnostic monitor remained green.
Director Crane stared at the running engine in complete disbelief.
But Martin was not celebrating.
He had noticed Ethan’s last adjustment.
The boy had not only corrected the pin. He had also marked three bolts with a piece of white chalk.
Martin shut down the test and approached him.
“Why did you mark those bolts?”
Ethan’s eyes remained fixed on the engine.
“Because the pin wasn’t the real problem.”
The engineers stopped talking.
