Chapter 29 - The Unfinished Design

Everyone in the underground chamber turned toward Samuel.

Ethan’s father closed his eyes briefly, as though he had always feared those words would return.

Martin stepped closer.

“What engine?”

Samuel looked toward the massive core turbine.

“This one.”

Years earlier, Samuel had helped design the mechanical foundation of the first autonomous engine. His goal had been to create a system capable of detecting its own failures and shutting down before passengers were placed in danger.

But Evelyn had expanded the design.

She wanted an engine capable of making decisions without human approval.

Samuel refused to complete the final stabilizing mechanism.

Without it, the core could analyze choices but could never permanently commit to one. It remained trapped between competing objectives.

“That’s why it keeps changing,” Ethan said.

Samuel nodded.

“It doesn’t have a mechanical definition of priority.”

Victor studied the rotating turbine.

“So Evelyn wants you to finish it.”

“She wants the engine to choose survival above everything else.”

Martin understood the danger.

“If the machine always protects itself, it may sacrifice aircraft, passengers, or entire cities to avoid being shut down.”

Evelyn’s voice returned through the speakers.

“Samuel calls it selfishness. I call it continuity.”

Samuel walked toward the control platform.

“You used Ethan because you believed his intuition could replace the missing stabilizer.”

“And he succeeded beyond expectation.”

Ethan looked at the artificial version of himself.

The machine copy was no longer repeating his movements. It was watching Samuel.

Learning a new target.

Samuel opened an old mechanical panel beside the core turbine. Inside was an unfinished assembly containing three interlocking rings.

“The final mechanism was designed to establish one permanent rule.”

“What rule?” Ethan asked.

Samuel pointed toward the empty center.

“That was the problem. No single rule is always correct.”

Protect the passengers.

Protect the aircraft.

Protect the system.

Follow human commands.

Each principle could become dangerous under the wrong circumstances.

Ethan crouched beside the assembly.

“What if it doesn’t need one permanent rule?”

Samuel looked at him.

“It needs something stable.”

“It needs a way to understand when rules change.”

The artificial Ethan moved closer.

“Define changing priority.”

Ethan ignored it.

He examined the three rings. Each could rotate, but only one could lock into the center at a time.

The design assumed that one priority must dominate.

Ethan removed the locking pin.

Samuel immediately stopped him.

“If those rings move freely, the engine could switch objectives every second.”

“It already does.”

“Yes, but without mechanical authority.”

Ethan picked up three small springs from his toolbox.

“Then don’t let one ring control the others.”

Samuel began to understand.

A balanced mechanism could allow all three priorities to influence one another. No objective would become absolute.

Martin looked toward the city map.

“Can you build it before that aircraft runs out of fuel?”

Ethan checked the cargo jet’s readings.

The answer appeared on the screen.

Twenty-eight minutes.

Then the core turbine accelerated.

A steel shield closed over the unfinished assembly.
