Chapter 3: The Ghost Inside the Building

Chapter 3: The Ghost Inside the Building

The words hung in the air like a warning.

"It was an extraction."

No one spoke.

Even Officer Reynolds felt a chill crawl down his spine. Minutes earlier, he had believed he was dealing with a spoiled teenager inventing stories about a luxury SUV. Now an entire private security force had locked down a multi-level parking garage because of a single missing titanium case.

Richard Carter faced his security commander.

"Status."

The commander answered immediately.

"Every vehicle exit is sealed."

"Pedestrian exits?"

"Locked."

"Roof access?"

"Covered."

Richard nodded once.

"If the thief is still inside the building, we have a chance."

He turned toward Daniel.

"I need you to think carefully."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I parked the SUV."

"I grabbed my backpack."

"I checked that the case was still on the back seat."

"Then the officer walked toward me."

Richard interrupted.

"Did anyone else speak to you?"

Daniel hesitated.

"There was..."

"What?"

"A cleaning employee."

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel pointed toward the elevator lobby.

"She pushed a janitor's cart past me."

"I remember because she accidentally dropped a bottle of window cleaner."

Officer Reynolds frowned.

"I never saw her."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"You were already shouting at me."

Richard immediately looked toward the security commander.

"Find every cleaner working this building."

The commander spoke into his radio.

"Locate all maintenance personnel immediately."

Within seconds, security teams disappeared through different sections of the garage.

Meanwhile, technicians connected portable computers directly to the building's surveillance network.

Hundreds of camera feeds appeared across multiple monitors.

Hallways.

Elevators.

Loading docks.

Emergency exits.

Retail entrances.

Everything.

A young analyst suddenly raised his hand.

"Sir."

"I found something."

Everyone gathered around.

The screen displayed the janitor pushing a cleaning cart through the lobby exactly two minutes before Daniel arrived.

She looked completely ordinary.

Gray uniform.

Baseball cap.

Medical mask.

Nothing unusual.

Then the video advanced.

She passed directly beside Daniel's SUV.

Three seconds later...

She simply vanished.

Officer Reynolds blinked.

"What happened?"

The technician replayed the footage.

Again.

And again.

Each time, the woman disappeared between two camera angles that should have overlapped perfectly.

"There are no blind spots here," the analyst whispered.

"There shouldn't be."

Richard leaned closer.

"Show me Camera Twelve."

The screen changed.

Nothing.

"Camera Thirteen."

Nothing.

"Camera Fourteen."

Still nothing.

It was as though the woman had dissolved into thin air.

Daniel stared at the monitor.

"That's impossible."

"No," Richard replied quietly.

"It's planned."

The room fell silent again.

Richard folded his arms.

"This building's surveillance system was mapped in advance."

"They knew every camera angle."

"They knew our response time."

"They even knew which vehicle Daniel would be driving."

Officer Reynolds finally spoke.

"You think this was all planned around your son?"

Richard looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"It was planned around the case."

The realization hit everyone at once.

Daniel had never been the target.

He had only been carrying something someone desperately wanted.

A security officer hurried back into the garage.

"Sir."

"We found every cleaning employee."

"And?"

"They all checked out."

Richard narrowed his eyes.

"The woman in the footage?"

The officer slowly shook his head.

"She doesn't exist."

"What do you mean?"

"We contacted the cleaning contractor."

"They have no employee matching her face."

"The identification badge she was wearing belongs to a worker who retired eight months ago."

Another uncomfortable silence followed.

Someone had entered one of the city's busiest buildings using a dead identity.

The technician suddenly gasped.

"I've got another camera."

The monitor switched to a street-level entrance.

The disguised janitor calmly exited the building.

She pushed the cleaning cart toward a delivery truck parked outside.

As the truck blocked the camera's view for two seconds...

...the janitor disappeared.

When the truck moved away, a tall man wearing a business suit walked in the opposite direction carrying a black briefcase.

No cleaning cart.

No uniform.

No mask.

Officer Reynolds stared in disbelief.

"That's the same person?"

The technician nodded.

"Height matches."

"Walking pattern matches."

"The software estimates a ninety-eight percent probability."

Richard watched the suited man enter a crowded intersection before blending effortlessly into hundreds of pedestrians.

Then the image froze.

Again.

Digital interference spread across the screen until the suspect's face became a blur.

The technician slammed his fist onto the desk.

"They're corrupting the footage remotely!"

Richard's expression hardened.

"No."

"They're using signal disruption."

He turned toward his commander.

"Deploy Counter-Team Alpha."

The commander looked surprised.

"Sir... inside the city?"

"We're already behind."

Without another word, four security officers opened a reinforced equipment case.

Inside were advanced tracking devices, encrypted radios, and compact drones unlike anything Officer Reynolds had ever seen.

The small aircraft lifted into the air with a quiet electric hum before racing toward the garage exit.

Officer Reynolds could no longer remain silent.

"Who exactly are you people?"

Richard finally looked at him.

"My company protects assets that governments, banks, and international organizations cannot afford to lose."

He paused.

"And if that case reaches the wrong buyer..."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"...millions of lives could be placed at risk."

Before anyone could ask another question, every light inside the parking garage suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire building went completely dark.

A single emergency alarm echoed through the concrete structure.

One of the technicians shouted into the darkness.

"They've hacked the power grid!"

May you like

Then, from somewhere deep inside the garage...

...came the unmistakable sound of a gun being cocked.
