Chapter 9: The Hidden Legacy

Chapter 9: The Hidden Legacy
Richard's ears still rang from the flash grenade.
Smoke drifted across the dock as alarms blared from damaged security vehicles. The firefight had ended almost as suddenly as it had begun, leaving only scattered shell casings and burning debris behind.
"Daniel!"
Richard's voice echoed across Pier 19.
No answer.
Commander Hayes sprinted toward him.
"We've secured the perimeter."
Richard grabbed him by the shoulder.
"My son."
Hayes lowered his head.
"We lost visual for nineteen seconds."
"Nineteen seconds was enough."
Richard looked around the dock with growing desperation.
Jonathan Hale was gone.
The black helicopter had disappeared beyond the harbor.
The only evidence that anyone had ever been there was the smoke rising from the cracked concrete.
A security officer rushed over carrying a small object.
"Sir."
"We found this."
It was Daniel's watch.
The glass face had cracked during the struggle, but the leather strap remained intact.
Richard took it carefully.
His expression suddenly changed.
"No..."
Commander Hayes frowned.
"What is it?"
Richard turned the watch over.
Hidden beneath the back cover was a tiny metal plate no larger than a fingernail.
He slid it aside.
A blinking green light appeared.
Hayes stared in surprise.
"A tracker?"
Richard nodded.
"I installed it years ago."
"You never told Daniel?"
"I promised myself I'd remove it when he turned eighteen."
Richard immediately handed the watch to a technician.
"Can you trace it?"
The technician connected it to a portable receiver.
For several tense seconds, nothing happened.
Then...
A signal appeared.
Weak.
But moving.
"I've got him!"
The screen displayed a blinking dot traveling north across the city.
Richard looked at the map.
"That's impossible."
Commander Hayes studied the route.
"It's heading toward the old industrial district."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"There isn't anything there anymore."
The technician zoomed in.
One abandoned structure stood directly beneath the signal.
Blackstone Shipyard.
Richard's face turned pale.
"I know that place."
Hayes looked at him.
"You've been there?"
Richard answered quietly.
"It was the first headquarters Carter Global ever operated from."
"The building was abandoned fifteen years ago."
Another analyst suddenly interrupted.
"Sir..."
"I've recovered information from the flash drive Jonathan gave us."
Richard looked over.
"What did you find?"
The analyst swallowed nervously.
"The board member Jonathan mentioned..."
"We've identified him."
Richard remained silent.
The analyst enlarged an old company photograph.
Seven executives stood beside Richard during Carter Global's opening ceremony.
One face became highlighted in red.
Richard stared at it.
"No..."
It was Margaret Ellis.
Chief Financial Officer.
One of the company's founding executives.
Daniel's godmother.
Hayes looked stunned.
"She helped build this company."
Richard nodded slowly.
"And she helped build Project Sentinel."
Another analyst spoke up.
"Sir..."
"There's more."
He opened a classified document recovered from the flash drive.
Across the top appeared a title Richard had not seen in nearly two decades.
PROJECT SENTINEL — SUCCESSION PROTOCOL
Richard's breathing slowed.
He already knew what was inside.
Hayes noticed his expression.
"You've read this before."
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he opened the file.
The first page contained a single sentence.
If the Director is compromised, authority transfers immediately to the designated successor.
Richard turned the page.
His hands trembled for the first time that night.
There was only one photograph attached.
Daniel.
Age twelve.
Hayes stared in disbelief.
"Daniel?"
Richard nodded.
"He was never just my son."
"He has been Project Sentinel's legal successor for six years."
The commander struggled to process what he had heard.
"You mean..."
Richard finished the sentence.
"If anything happened to me..."
"...Daniel would inherit every classified archive, every encrypted network, and every security protocol we ever built."
Silence settled over the command vehicle.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The stolen titanium case.
The attack on headquarters.
The ambush at Pier 19.
Shadow Division had never wanted Richard Carter.
They wanted the only person capable of unlocking the next generation of Project Sentinel.
Daniel.
Suddenly every monitor inside the mobile command center flickered.
A live video feed appeared.
Daniel sat in a metal chair inside a dimly lit warehouse.
His hands were restrained, but he appeared unharmed.
A masked figure stepped into view.
The same operative who had opened the vault.
He removed his gloves slowly.
Then, for the first time...
He removed his mask.
Every person inside the command vehicle stared at the screen.
Richard's face lost all color.
His lips barely moved as he whispered the man's name.
"Michael..."
Commander Hayes looked at him in shock.
"You know him?"
Richard never took his eyes off the monitor.
"I buried him."
The masked man smiled calmly at the camera.
"Hello, Richard."
"You look surprised."
Richard's voice was barely audible.
"You died eighteen years ago."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"You left me to die."
He placed one hand on Daniel's shoulder.
"This time..."
"...you're going to make a very different choice."
The screen suddenly went black.
May you like
Only a single line of text remained.
Come to Blackstone Shipyard alone... or your son dies before sunrise.
