Chapter 6: The Hunt Begins

Chapter 6: The Hunt Begins

The flames rising from Carter Global Headquarters painted the night sky a deep crimson.

Inside the parking garage, every phone began ringing at once. News alerts flooded social media within minutes. Helicopters rushed toward the city skyline while emergency sirens echoed through the streets.

Richard Carter watched the live helicopter footage on a security tablet.

The headquarters wasn't simply burning.

Someone had detonated carefully placed charges that destroyed only specific sections of the building.

"They're covering their tracks," he said quietly.

The security commander nodded.

"They knew exactly where to place the explosives."

Officer Reynolds lowered his weapon.

"I don't understand any of this."

Richard turned toward him.

"You weren't supposed to."

"For twenty years, my company has protected information too dangerous to exist in public databases."

"And tonight..."

"...someone finally came to collect it."

Daniel looked toward the burning skyline.

"What was inside that container?"

Richard remained silent for several seconds.

Then he answered.

"A list."

"A list of what?"

"The identities of hundreds of undercover intelligence officers operating around the world."

Daniel stared at him.

"If that list is leaked..."

Richard finished the sentence.

"Families disappear."

"Governments fall."

"Entire intelligence networks collapse."

The realization struck everyone standing nearby.

This had never been about money.

The container held information capable of changing global security.

Suddenly another security officer ran toward them.

"Sir!"

"We've recovered something from Daniel's SUV."

"What is it?"

The officer carefully held up a tiny black object no larger than a coin.

"It was attached underneath the rear seat."

Richard examined it.

His expression darkened immediately.

"A tracker."

The commander frowned.

"So they never followed Daniel."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"They followed the vehicle."

A technician connected the tiny device to a portable scanner.

Lines of encrypted code streamed across the screen.

Seconds later, the software revealed something unexpected.

The tracker wasn't transmitting anymore.

Instead...

It was receiving signals.

"It's downloading data," the technician whispered.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Disconnect it."

Too late.

The small device emitted a sharp electronic tone.

Then a robotic voice spoke through its tiny speaker.

"Good evening, Director Carter."

Every security officer instantly aimed their weapons at the tracker as if it were alive.

The distorted voice continued.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...thank you for delivering everything exactly where we needed it."

Richard remained perfectly calm.

"Who are you?"

A soft chuckle answered.

"You've spent years protecting secrets."

"We simply believe secrets deserve new owners."

Richard replied coldly.

"You won't escape."

"We already have."

The voice paused.

Then added one final sentence.

"By the way..."

"You still haven't realized there's another spy standing beside you."

The transmission ended.

Silence returned.

No one moved.

Every member of the security team slowly looked at one another.

Officer Reynolds felt his heartbeat accelerate.

Someone inside Richard Carter's own organization...

...had betrayed them.

Richard scanned every face surrounding him.

Trusted commanders.

Veteran analysts.

Drivers.

Technicians.

Men and women who had worked beside him for years.

One of them had helped steal the titanium case.

One of them had guided Shadow Division into the vault.

The commander broke the silence.

"Sir..."

"Should we begin internal screening?"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"If the traitor knows we're looking..."

"...they'll disappear."

Daniel looked confused.

"So what do we do?"

Richard's eyes fixed on the burning headquarters in the distance.

"We let them believe they've won."

The commander immediately understood.

"A trap?"

Richard nodded.

"They stole the container."

"But they don't know something."

"What?"

Richard looked at his son with a faint smile.

"The real list..."

"...was never inside the vault."

At that exact moment, another encrypted phone rang.

Richard answered.

A familiar voice whispered only six words.

"Director... we found the real thief."

Richard's expression instantly changed.

"Where?"

May you like

The answer made everyone freeze.

"He's still inside the parking garage."
