Chapter 8: The Meeting at Pier 19

Chapter 8: The Meeting at Pier 19

The cold wind swept across the abandoned docks as midnight approached.

Pier 19 had once been one of the busiest shipping terminals in the city. Now, rust covered the abandoned cranes, broken containers lined the waterfront, and only the sound of waves crashing against the wooden pilings disturbed the silence.

Richard Carter arrived exactly two minutes before midnight.

A single black sedan rolled to a stop beneath a flickering streetlight.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat.

"You told them you were coming alone," he said quietly.

Richard nodded.

"I lied."

Several hundred yards away, hidden among empty cargo containers, Carter Security's Counter-Team Alpha monitored every movement through thermal scopes and encrypted drones.

Commander Hayes spoke softly into his headset.

"All units in position."

"No visual on the target."

Richard stepped out of the vehicle.

The dock looked completely deserted.

Then...

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

"Still punctual after all these years."

Jonathan Hale emerged from behind a shipping container, dressed in an expensive navy overcoat as though he were attending a board meeting instead of a secret rendezvous.

His expression was calm.

Almost friendly.

Richard stared at the man he had once considered a brother.

"You betrayed me."

Jonathan smiled faintly.

"I expected a more emotional greeting."

Daniel stepped out beside his father.

"Why?"

Jonathan looked at him.

"So this is Daniel."

"I've heard you're as stubborn as your father."

Richard took one step forward.

"I asked you a question."

Jonathan sighed.

"Because you never understood what Carter Global became."

"We were supposed to build the world's greatest security company."

"Instead..."

"...you locked away knowledge that could reshape nations."

Richard's voice remained steady.

"It wasn't ours to sell."

Jonathan laughed.

"Everything has a price."

"Governments buy information."

"Corporations buy influence."

"Intelligence agencies buy loyalty."

"Why should we be different?"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"You sold your conscience."

"No," Jonathan replied.

"I sold an illusion."

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

The ocean waves filled the silence.

Then Jonathan reached into his coat.

Every sniper immediately tightened their grip.

Commander Hayes whispered,

"Target reaching inside his jacket."

"Permission to engage?"

Richard answered through his hidden earpiece.

"Negative."

Jonathan removed a small flash drive.

He tossed it onto the dock.

It slid to Richard's feet.

"The files Ethan stole."

Richard didn't move.

"You expect me to believe this is everything?"

"Of course not."

Jonathan smiled again.

"I only wanted to prove something."

Richard finally picked up the drive.

A technician watching remotely accessed it immediately.

Seconds later, his voice burst through the radio.

"Sir!"

"It's authentic."

"Financial records."

"Private communications."

"Board meeting transcripts."

Richard frowned.

"What does it show?"

The technician hesitated.

"It proves someone inside Carter Global has been leaking classified information..."

"...for almost twelve years."

Daniel stared at Jonathan.

"You started this twelve years ago?"

Jonathan slowly shook his head.

"No."

"I joined eleven years ago."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

"The man who recruited me..."

"...is still sitting on your board."

Before Richard could respond, a loud explosion erupted behind the abandoned warehouses.

Boom!

The ground shook violently.

Commander Hayes shouted into the radio.

"Ambush!"

Gunfire erupted from three different directions.

Bullets slammed into steel containers, sending showers of sparks across the dock.

"Protect Director Carter!"

Counter-Team Alpha returned fire while drones rose into the night sky, searching for the attackers.

Daniel pulled his father behind a concrete barrier.

"Who are they?"

Jonathan calmly looked toward the gunfire.

"They're here to kill all of us."

Richard stared at him.

"Even you?"

Jonathan nodded.

"I outlived my usefulness."

A black helicopter suddenly appeared above the harbor without navigation lights.

A rope dropped from its open side door.

Masked operatives began descending toward the dock.

Commander Hayes shouted,

"Shadow Division!"

"They're extracting someone!"

Richard looked directly at Jonathan.

"You planned this."

Jonathan met his gaze.

"No."

"My meeting with you..."

"...was never the mission."

Richard's heartbeat quickened.

"Then what was?"

Jonathan slowly pointed toward Daniel.

"The mission..."

"...has always been your son."

Daniel froze.

Before anyone could react, a flash grenade landed between them.

A blinding white light exploded across the dock.

The world disappeared into light and deafening silence.

When Richard's vision finally returned a few seconds later...

Daniel was gone.
