Chapter 16 - The Mark on the Guard

Daniel stared at the monitor.
The armed man behind Clara kept the gun pressed against her back while the ballroom guests remained frozen in their seats.
On his wrist, clearly visible beneath his sleeve, was the same faded guitar symbol.
Not a copy.
Not an imitation.
The lines were identical to Daniel’s tattoo.
Elena moved closer to the screen.
“That mark belonged to the original trust protectors.”
Samuel looked at her.
“You said the tattoo was a warning.”
“It was both. The founding members used it to identify those chosen to guard the heirs.”
Arthur pulled against the metal partition trapping his arm.
“That is impossible. The protectors were dissolved before Clara was born.”
The guard looked directly into the ballroom camera.
“No, Arthur. You only believed they were.”
His voice echoed through the underground archive.
Arthur stopped struggling.
Daniel recognized the man from somewhere, but he could not place him.
Then Eleanor whispered, “That’s Michael Arden.”
Victor turned sharply.
“The attorney?”
Michael Arden had served as legal adviser to several major cultural foundations. He was known for protecting wealthy families from public scandal.
He had also handled Elena’s death certificate.
Daniel’s anger rose instantly.
“You declared her dead.”
Michael heard him through the open audio feed.
“I protected her from the people who wanted her permanently silent.”
Clara kept both hands near the piano.
“Then why are you pointing a gun at me?”
“Because someone in this room has already changed the sequence.”
The timer reached six minutes.
Michael turned toward the guests.
“Whoever altered the authentication will expose themselves when the final movement begins.”
Victor looked at Arthur.
“You told us Clara knew the full sequence.”
“She does.”
Michael shook his head.
“She knows the version Arthur taught her.”
Clara’s face tightened.
“There is another version?”
Daniel looked toward Lydia.
She nodded slowly.
“The true final movement requires two players, but not at the same piano.”
Samuel understood first.
“One heir above. One below.”
Elena pointed toward an old upright piano hidden behind the archive shelves.
Dust covered its keys.
Daniel rushed toward it.
On the monitor, Clara watched him through the camera.
Michael lowered the gun slightly.
“Both heirs must begin together.”
Daniel sat at the underground piano.
Clara placed her hands over the ballroom grand.
The timer reached five minutes.
Lydia began calling out the opening notes.
Daniel played the first chord.
Clara answered from above.
For several seconds, the two melodies moved together perfectly.
Then one note sounded wrong.
A deep mechanical vibration rolled through the archive floor.
Arthur’s eyes widened.
“Stop playing!”
A crack appeared across the concrete beneath the shelves.
Daniel lifted his hands.
On-screen, Clara did the same.
The timer froze at 04:17.
Then a new message appeared across every monitor:
THIRD HEIR DETECTED.
No one spoke.
Daniel looked at Lydia.
“You said there were twins.”
Lydia stared at the message.
“I was told there were only two children.”
Behind them, a slow clap echoed from the service tunnel.

A man stepped into the red light.
He looked almost exactly like Daniel.
