Chapter 29 - The Piano Without Hands

The second note sounded before anyone reached the instrument.
Another collar turned red.
Clara struck the piano lid shut.
The music continued beneath it.
Invisible mechanisms pressed the keys from inside.
The Director stepped calmly away.
“The selection no longer requires consent.”
Victor grabbed the side of the piano.
“Shut it down.”
Michael Arden, bleeding from the forehead, laughed from the floor.
“You cannot shut down a process older than everyone in this room.”
Clara pointed the gun at him.
“Then tell us how to interrupt it.”
“Destroy the inheritance records.”
Daniel heard the answer through the monitor.
He turned toward the circular transfer chamber.
“The records are here.”
Samuel shook his head.
“Those are copies. The primary registry must be stored elsewhere.”
Hope looked toward the black score on the conductor’s platform.
“The book.”
Daniel climbed the stairs and opened it.
The blank pages were now filled with names.
Thousands of them.
Each name was linked by thin lines to other identities, families, foundations, courts, and political offices.
At the center of every page stood one title:
THE KEEPER
Julian looked over Daniel’s shoulder.
“The Director?”
“No,” Samuel said. “The person who owns the master registry.”
The piano in the ballroom played a third note.
Another child was selected.
Victor pulled at the instrument’s front panel until the wood cracked.
Inside were wires, gears, and a narrow roll of punched paper guiding the melody.
Clara ripped it free.
The piano stopped.
For one second.
Then the grand instrument across the ballroom stage began playing instead.
Eleanor appeared behind it.
Daniel had not seen her return.
Her face was pale, and a thin wire was wrapped around one wrist.
“Eleanor!” Clara shouted.
Eleanor looked directly into the camera.
“I’m sorry.”
Her fingers continued playing against her will.
Arthur emerged from behind the stage curtain, holding the control wire.
His injured arm was heavily bandaged.
Samuel stared at the monitor.
“He escaped the archive.”
Arthur smiled.
“I never needed the elevator.”
Victor stepped toward him.
“You knew I was part of the Vale family.”
“I knew before you did.”
“Then why let me believe I owned the foundation?”
“Because you were useful when you thought power belonged to you.”
The fourth note sounded.
Another child’s collar turned red.
Daniel searched the black score.
One page contained a diagram of the ballroom pianos.
Beneath it were three words:
KEEPER OVERRIDE CHORD
The notes had been cut from the page.
Hope touched the torn edge.
“Someone removed it recently.”
Samuel looked toward Eleanor.
“She knows the chord.”
Arthur pulled the wire tighter.
Eleanor’s hand struck another key.
Daniel spoke into the ballroom feed.
“Eleanor, change the melody.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can. You signed the first authorization because they deceived you. Don’t let them use your hands again.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Arthur tightened the wire.
Eleanor suddenly slammed both forearms down across the keys.
A violent cluster of notes shook the ballroom.
Every collar turned black.
The transfer screens below flickered.
Then a hidden compartment opened beneath the underground piano.

Inside was a sealed envelope addressed to Daniel.
The handwriting belonged to Elena.
