Chapter 31 - The Boy With Daniel’s Face

The second Daniel looked exactly the same.
Same height.
Same scar.
Same gray eyes.
Even the faded guitar tattoo appeared on his wrist.
Hope stepped backward.
Julian raised the violin like a weapon.
Samuel whispered, “A replacement.”
The stranger smiled.
“That is what he believes you are.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Who are you?”
The young man glanced toward Elena.
“You never told him?”
Elena looked exhausted.
“I hoped this room would remain sealed.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You watched me grow up.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me which one of us is real.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Both.”
The answer silenced everyone.
She explained slowly.
After the fire, the trust had feared losing the infant heir. Lydia’s child was too valuable to risk.
So they created two identities from one bloodline.
One child remained with Lydia.
Another was placed with Elena.
Julian frowned.
“You cannot create a second baby from records.”
“No,” Elena replied. “But you can hide a twin.”
Daniel looked toward the stranger.
“Another twin?”
“Not exactly,” he said.
Samuel studied both faces.
“Identical cousins.”
Elena nodded.
“Lydia and I gave birth within the same week.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“You had a son.”
“Yes.”
“And you gave him my face?”
“The trust combined your records before either child received a legal identity.”
The stranger walked forward.
“My name was Adrian before they erased it.”
Daniel looked at the empty birth certificates.
“Why hide him here?”
Adrian answered.
“To preserve an uncontested heir if you failed.”
Hope stared at the thousands of documents.
“How long have you been in this room?”
“Not always here. Different schools. Different homes. Different names.”
Julian lowered the violin slightly.
“You were the backup.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I was the version trained to remember everything Daniel was made to forget.”
The Keeper process sounded through distant speakers.
91%.
Adrian pointed toward the far wall.
A large machine held reels of film, medical records, and memory-test recordings.
“I know every selection Daniel conducted. Every child Samuel chose. Every contract Victor signed.”
Samuel looked at him with dread.
“And the original registry?”
Adrian pressed his palm against the wall.
A panel opened.
Inside was a thin silver book.
“The registry is not names.”
Daniel approached.
“What is it?”
“DNA profiles.”
Elena explained that the trust never relied completely on documents. Every child, heir, replacement, and trustee had been cataloged biologically.
Hope looked at the book.
“That can prove who everyone was before the names.”
“Yes,” Adrian replied. “But opening it activates a global release.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Then open it.”
Elena shook her head.
“The system will also reveal every protected child’s location.”
Daniel understood.
“Some of them are still hiding from the people who bought them.”
The Keeper process reached 94%.
Adrian looked directly at Daniel.
“There is another option.”
“What?”
“One of us becomes the Keeper willingly and deletes the location files before releasing the identities.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And what happens to the Keeper?”
Adrian smiled without warmth.
“The system erases everything they were before.”
Above them, Victor screamed as the process reached 95%.
Then the silver book opened by itself.
The first name printed on the page was not Daniel’s.
It was the Director’s.
