Chapter 4 - The Empty Hallway

For three seconds, no one understood what had happened.
Guests stared at the empty space beside the piano where Samuel Vale had been standing moments earlier. The emergency lights painted the ballroom in a dim red glow, turning every frightened face into something unreal.
Daniel released Victor’s wrist and rushed toward the side door.
It was open.
Beyond it stretched a narrow service hallway used by catering staff. One of the silver carts had been knocked over, and broken glasses covered the floor.
“Samuel!” Daniel shouted.
No answer came.
Eleanor followed him, lifting her dress above the shattered glass.
“There’s another exit near the kitchen,” she said. “He may have been taken that way.”
Victor remained near the piano, strangely calm now.
Daniel noticed.
“You don’t look surprised.”
Victor adjusted his jacket.
“I told you this evening had nothing to do with me.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
“The lights failed at the exact moment the recording played your name.”
“That proves someone planned this.”
“Yes,” Daniel said. “Someone who knew Samuel would bring the evidence.”
Security guards entered the ballroom and began locking the doors. The guests protested immediately, demanding explanations, but the head of security ignored them.
“No one leaves until we determine what was stolen,” he announced.
Daniel looked toward the piano.
The wooden case was still there, but every handwritten page had vanished.
Then Eleanor pointed at the floor.
A thin strip of paper lay beneath the piano bench.
Daniel picked it up.
Only four musical bars remained, written in faded blue ink. Beneath them was a short message.
Find the room where the third movement began.
Daniel read it twice.
Eleanor’s expression became tense.
“The old Langford music studio.”
Victor turned sharply.
“That building was demolished.”
“No,” Eleanor replied. “The main structure was destroyed, but the underground rehearsal room survived.”
Victor walked closer.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“I was there after the fire.”
The ballroom doors suddenly shook as someone struck them from the outside.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came through the wood.
“Daniel Reed must come alone.”
May you like
Daniel recognized the voice immediately.
It belonged to Samuel.
