Chapter 42 - THE ROOM OF MEMORIES

The conference room continued evolving.

Whiteboards had been replaced by larger display panels. Documents were scanned, indexed, and carefully stored in acid-free archival boxes. Richard insisted that every photograph receive a digital backup before being returned to its protective sleeve.

"This isn't just organization," Ryan said.

"It's preservation."

Richard nodded.

"If future generations read these records, they should know exactly where each document came from."

Daniel slowly walked around the room.

One wall now displayed factory photographs in chronological order.

Another held engineering notebooks beside inspection reports.

A third displayed personal memories collected from former employees.

Each testimony added another human voice.

Not one contradicted the others.

Helen studied the display thoughtfully.

"Martin always believed people remembered feelings longer than numbers."

Samuel smiled.

"That's exactly what's happening."

Ryan pointed toward a corner of the room.

"What should go there?"

Everyone looked.

The space remained empty.

Daniel thought for several moments before answering.

"Not documents."

"What then?" Ryan asked.

Daniel placed Martin's brass badge gently on the table.

"Stories."

The room became quiet.

He continued.

"The papers explain what happened."

"The people explain why it mattered."

Samuel nodded slowly.

"So we start recording interviews."

Richard immediately opened his notebook.

"Every witness."

"Helen."

"Thomas."

"Evan."

"Jonathan."

"And anyone else willing to share their memories."

Helen smiled warmly.

"History is strongest when ordinary people are allowed to speak."

Daniel looked once more at the growing archive.

Only days earlier he had entered this building believing he would never belong inside.

Now he was helping build something that might outlast all of them.
