Chapter 54 - THE LITTLE NOTEBOOK
Victor remained for several hours, sharing stories no document could ever capture.
He remembered Martin arriving exhausted after overnight testing sessions.
He remembered Martin insisting on paying the full repair price even when Victor offered discounts.
He remembered Martin bringing young apprentices into the shop simply to teach them that every skilled craft deserved respect.
Before leaving, Victor reached into his coat pocket.
"I almost forgot."
He removed a notebook barely larger than his hand.
"I found this tucked inside your father's watch case."
Daniel carefully opened it.
Unlike Martin's engineering journals, this notebook contained only short entries.
One sentence per page.
Thoughts.
Reminders.
Questions.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Ryan read the first page aloud.
> Learn every person's name.
Another page.
> Thank people before they expect it.
Another.
> Never confuse being busy with being useful.
Samuel smiled quietly.
"That's wisdom."
Daniel continued turning pages.
Some entries referred to work.
Others to family.
Many simply recorded observations.
> The best teachers ask questions before giving answers.
> Every apprentice deserves one mistake they never have to repeat alone.
> Listen completely before deciding.
Richard looked fascinated.
"This isn't a diary."
"No," Helen replied.
"It's how Martin trained himself."
Toward the final pages, Daniel discovered one unfinished sentence.
> If one day Daniel is old enough to understand...
The page ended there.
Blank.
No continuation.
Daniel stared at it for a long time.
"What do you think he meant?"
Helen answered softly.
"I don't know."
"But perhaps..."
"...he expected to finish it later."
Daniel closed the notebook gently.
Although the sentence remained incomplete...
It somehow felt appropriate.
Martin Cross's lessons had never truly ended.
