Chapter 1: The Girl Who Refused to Kneel

Chapter 1: The Girl Who Refused to Kneel

The laughter inside the school gym seemed to bounce endlessly off the high ceiling.

Hundreds of students had gathered after rumors spread across campus that something "huge" was about to happen. Nobody knew exactly who had organized the spectacle, but everyone recognized the center of attention the moment they stepped inside.

Anna.

The quiet girl with the oversized gray hoodie.

She stood alone near the center court with her backpack resting beside her feet. Her long brown hair partially covered her face, hiding the expression everyone desperately wanted to see.

Fear.

Humiliation.

Defeat.

Instead, she simply remained silent.

Around her, dozens of students lifted their phones into the air. Some streamed the event live while others whispered excitedly, hoping today's drama would become the school's biggest viral video.

"This is going to be good."

"I heard Mason finally snapped."

"She embarrassed him yesterday in science class."

"No... she supposedly made him look stupid."

The rumors changed every few seconds.

None of them were true.

Yesterday's incident had been nothing more than an accident.

During chemistry class, Mason had been showing off as usual, laughing loudly while pretending to explain an experiment better than the teacher herself. Wanting to impress everyone, he ignored every safety instruction.

Seconds later, the experiment exploded into a cloud of harmless blue smoke.

The entire classroom burst into laughter.

Not because Mason had failed.

Because Anna, sitting quietly near the window, instinctively reached over and shut off the burner before the accident became dangerous.

The teacher praised her quick thinking.

For the first time all year, someone had received applause instead of Mason.

His pride never recovered.

To someone who ruled the school through intimidation, public embarrassment was something that demanded revenge.

Now he stood only a few feet away.

Mason was nearly twice Anna's size.

Captain of the wrestling team.

Star linebacker.

Feared by nearly every student in school.

He slowly cracked his knuckles while smiling at the cheering crowd.

"You've got one chance," he announced loudly.

His deep voice echoed through every corner of the gym.

"Kneel."

The gym immediately became silent.

Anna didn't answer.

Mason stepped even closer.

"I said..."

He pointed directly at the polished wooden floor.

"Kneel."

"...and apologize for making me look like an idiot."

Someone near the bleachers laughed.

Another shouted...

"Do it!"

"Save yourself!"

"It's just an apology!"

Several students began chanting.

"Kneel!"

"Kneel!"

"Kneel!"

The chant grew louder.

Teachers were strangely absent.

The vice principal had reportedly been called into an emergency meeting.

Campus security hadn't arrived.

For the next few minutes, the students believed nobody would interrupt what was happening.

Mason enjoyed every second.

He slowly walked around Anna like a predator circling trapped prey.

"You've been hiding behind that hoodie since the first day you transferred here."

"You don't have friends."

"You don't talk."

"You eat lunch alone."

He leaned closer.

"So who exactly do you think is going to help you?"

The crowd laughed again.

Anna finally raised her eyes.

Not angrily.

Not fearfully.

Simply calmly.

"I never asked anyone to help me."

Her quiet answer confused everyone.

Mason blinked.

"What?"

"I said..."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"I never needed anyone to."

The confidence in her voice didn't match the girl everyone believed they knew.

Instead of sounding frightened...

She sounded patient.

Almost as if she were waiting for something.

Mason interpreted her calmness as disrespect.

His face darkened.

"You think this is funny?"

Without warning, he grabbed her backpack and threw it across the gym floor.

Books scattered everywhere.

Loose papers floated through the air like falling snow.

Students laughed louder than ever.

Several rushed forward—not to help—but to record close-up videos.

One notebook landed near the front row.

A student picked it up.

"Look..."

"It's full of handwritten equations."

"What kind of nerd writes this much?"

Another student flipped through the pages.

"They're impossible to understand."

"They don't even look like school assignments."

Anna quietly walked toward the notebook.

Before she could reach it, Mason stepped on it.

His muddy sneaker crushed the pages.

"Oh..."

he smirked.

"Was this important?"

She stopped walking.

For the first time...

A tiny change appeared in her expression.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

"You shouldn't have done that."

The sentence sounded almost like a warning.

Mason laughed so loudly that half the gym joined him.

"Oh really?"

"What are you going to do?"

He shoved her shoulder.

Hard.

Anna stumbled backward several steps but never fell.

The crowd erupted.

"There we go!"

"Fight back!"

"Push him!"

"Hit him!"

Phones followed every movement.

Millions of future views seemed only one dramatic moment away.

Instead...

Anna slowly adjusted her hoodie.

Then she glanced toward the large digital clock hanging above the basketball hoop.

11:58 AM.

She checked the time.

Again.

Almost as though she had been expecting noon.

One student noticed.

"Why is she looking at the clock?"

"I don't know."

"It's weird."

Mason noticed too.

"What?"

"Waiting for your parents?"

She ignored him.

11:59.

The gym suddenly felt strangely quiet.

Even students who had been laughing moments earlier began feeling an unexpected tension.

Anna looked toward the entrance doors.

Still closed.

She took one slow breath.

Then whispered quietly enough that only Mason could hear.

"You still have one minute."

He frowned.

"One minute until what?"

She didn't answer.

The giant digital clock clicked forward.

12:00 PM.

At that exact second...

Every phone inside the gym vibrated simultaneously.

One after another.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Hundreds of notification sounds echoed throughout the building.

Students instinctively looked down.

Confused expressions replaced their laughter.

Teachers standing near the walls suddenly froze.

Several faces turned pale.

One student whispered...

"What is this?"

Another slowly read the notification aloud.

"It says..."

"Emergency Assembly Authorization..."

Nobody understood.

Then the massive gym entrance doors swung open.

Not with panic.

Not with shouting.

But with perfect discipline.

Several men and women dressed in dark business suits entered first.

Behind them walked uniformed security officers wearing badges no student recognized.

The entire gym fell into complete silence.

Their leader scanned the room once.

His eyes immediately found Anna.

Without acknowledging anyone else, he walked straight across the basketball court.

Every student instinctively stepped aside.

Even Mason moved without realizing it.

The man stopped only inches from Anna.

Then, in front of the entire school...

He lowered his head respectfully.

"Miss Anna..."

"We sincerely apologize for arriving thirty-seven seconds later than scheduled."

The silence that followed was so complete that the sound of a single phone slipping from someone's trembling hand echoed across the gym floor.

No one laughed anymore.

No one moved.

And Mason suddenly realized he had made the biggest mistake of his life.
