Chapter 8: The Investigation Uncovered More Than Anyone Expected

Chapter 8: The Investigation Uncovered More Than Anyone Expected
The gym fell silent as Dr. Evelyn Brooks walked toward the center court.
Unlike the reporters outside or the parents gathered beyond the gates, she showed no emotion. Years of leading district investigations had taught her never to form conclusions before seeing every piece of evidence.
Behind her, six investigators wheeled in locked metal cases and portable computers.
The atmosphere instantly became official.
This was no longer a school assembly.
It was an investigation.
Dr. Brooks stopped in front of Jonathan Vale and extended her hand.
"Mr. Vale."
Jonathan shook it politely.
"Thank you for coming so quickly."
She nodded.
"When I received your emergency report, I thought it involved a single bullying incident."
Her eyes slowly swept across the gym.
"I now understand it may be something much larger."
Richard Carter interrupted.
"With respect, Superintendent, this has already gone too far."
Dr. Brooks turned toward him.
"Mr. Carter, isn't it?"
"Yes."
"I've reviewed your statement."
Richard frowned.
"My statement?"
She lifted a tablet.
"The one your attorney emailed to the district thirty-two minutes ago."
Richard's face stiffened.
He hadn't expected anyone to read it so quickly.
Dr. Brooks continued calmly.
"It claims today's events are an organized attempt to damage your family's reputation."
Richard straightened his tie.
"That's correct."
She nodded once.
"Then we'll let the evidence decide."
Without another word, she signaled to one of the investigators.
The man connected a secure hard drive to the gym's projector.
A new folder appeared on the massive screen.
DIGITAL EVIDENCE RECOVERY
Several students exchanged nervous glances.
One investigator addressed the crowd.
"Our department has already received more than eight hundred videos, photographs, and witness statements submitted voluntarily by students and parents."
Gasps spread across the bleachers.
Eight hundred.
No one imagined that many recordings existed.
The investigator continued.
"Deleting files after today's incident does not erase previously uploaded copies."
Several students quietly slipped their phones back into their pockets.
Another investigator spoke.
"We are not here to punish honest witnesses."
"We are here to establish the truth."
Anna listened quietly.
She appreciated that sentence.
Truth.
Not revenge.
That was all she had ever wanted.
Dr. Brooks looked toward Mason.
"Mr. Carter."
Mason swallowed.
"Yes?"
"I'd like you to answer one simple question."
He nodded nervously.
"Have you ever threatened another student inside this school?"
Richard quickly stepped forward.
"My son doesn't need to answer without legal counsel."
Dr. Brooks smiled politely.
"He's free to remain silent."
She closed the folder.
"We already have the recordings."
Mason's heart sank.
The first recovered video appeared on the screen.
It had been secretly recorded months earlier inside the locker room.
Mason cornered a freshman against the lockers.
"If you tell anyone..."
he warned,
"I'll make sure nobody sits with you ever again."
The frightened freshman nodded.
The recording ended.
Another began.
This one showed Mason demanding homework answers from another student.
When the student refused, Mason grabbed his backpack and threw it into a trash can filled with dirty water.
The gym remained silent.
Nobody defended him anymore.
Richard slowly turned toward his son.
"Mason..."
His voice was quieter now.
"Did you really do this?"
Mason couldn't answer.
Because everyone had already seen it.
Dr. Brooks clicked another file.
This time, however, the screen displayed something unexpected.
A spreadsheet.
Columns of names.
Dates.
Classrooms.
Locations.
The investigators looked puzzled.
"What is this?" one asked.
Anna recognized it immediately.
"My notes."
Everyone turned toward her.
"You made this?"
She nodded.
"For months."
Jonathan looked surprised.
"You never told me."
"I wanted facts."
Anna walked toward the screen.
She pointed to the first column.
"Every time I witnessed bullying, I wrote down the time."
She pointed to another.
"The location."
Another.
"The people involved."
Then the final column.
"And whether an adult intervened."
The investigator stared at the data.
"There are..."
He paused.
"...one hundred twenty-seven incidents."
Anna nodded.
"Only during the eight months I've attended here."
The room became unbearably quiet.
One hundred twenty-seven.
Not rumors.
Not guesses.
Documented observations.
Dr. Brooks looked genuinely impressed.
"You created this by yourself?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Anna answered without hesitation.
"Because feelings can be ignored."
"But evidence is harder to dismiss."
Jonathan smiled faintly.
For the first time that day, pride showed openly on his face.
Richard, however, looked increasingly uneasy.
He whispered to his attorney,
"This keeps getting worse."
The attorney didn't disagree.
"It does."
Then another investigator raised his hand.
"Superintendent..."
"I've found something unusual."
Everyone looked toward his monitor.
"It appears multiple disciplinary reports were edited after submission."
Dr. Brooks frowned.
"Edited?"
"Yes."
"The original complaints describe physical intimidation."
He clicked another file.
"But the archived versions were rewritten to describe simple disagreements between students."
The gym erupted into shocked whispers.
Someone had altered official records.
Dr. Brooks' expression hardened.
"Can you identify who made the edits?"
The investigator typed rapidly.
A loading icon spun for several seconds.
Then a single administrator account appeared.
The room froze.
The account belonged to...
Vice Principal Daniel Reeves.
Every head turned toward him.
His face instantly lost all color.
"I..."
he stammered.
"It's not what it looks like."
Dr. Brooks' voice was firm.
"Then explain it."
Reeves wiped sweat from his forehead.
"I was told..."
He stopped.
Richard Carter narrowed his eyes.
"Told by who?"
The vice principal looked around the gym, trapped by hundreds of watching eyes.
He knew that whatever he said next would change everything.
His lips trembled.
Finally, he whispered,
"I wasn't protecting the school."
A heavy silence followed.
"I was protecting someone."
Richard Carter's confident expression disappeared.
May you like
Because deep inside...
He already knew who the vice principal was about to name.
