Chapter 25: Tunnel B-17

Chapter 25: Tunnel B-17

No one reached for the map.

Everyone simply stared at the words displayed on the monitor.

Tunnel B-17

The forgotten passage had never appeared in any modern blueprint.

According to the archived engineering plans, it had been sealed shortly after the headquarters was supposedly demolished.

Officially...

It no longer existed.

Dr. Evelyn Brooks broke the silence.

"Can we access it?"

The city archivist searched through several engineering files before slowly shaking his head.

"Not from any public entrance."

Jonathan Vale folded the map.

"There is always another entrance."

Anna looked toward the faded blueprint.

"The original survey."

Jonathan nodded.

"Exactly."

The engineering plans showed a network of maintenance tunnels beneath the headquarters. Most had been filled with concrete decades earlier.

Except one.

B-17.

Instead of ending beneath the building, it extended nearly three hundred feet farther than the others.

The lead investigator frowned.

"That makes no sense."

Mrs. Foster looked at the blueprint.

"Why would a maintenance tunnel continue past the building?"

No one answered.

Because everyone was wondering the same thing.

One forensic engineer enlarged the drawing.

"There."

He pointed to a handwritten annotation almost invisible beneath years of faded ink.

Restricted Access — Authorization Level Seven

Dr. Brooks frowned.

"I've never heard of Authorization Level Seven."

Jonathan's expression grew serious.

"Because almost nobody has."

Richard Carter crossed his arms.

"What is it?"

Jonathan took a slow breath.

"Years ago, before education partnerships became public, certain facilities were classified under a higher level of administrative security."

Anna listened carefully.

"For what purpose?"

"Officially?"

Jonathan answered.

"Emergency records."

He paused.

"Unofficially..."

"I never found out."

The room became quiet again.

Another investigator interrupted.

"We've located original construction photographs."

The images appeared on the screen.

Workers stood outside the headquarters during construction.

Concrete walls.

Steel beams.

Heavy excavation equipment.

Anna looked closely.

"Go back."

The investigator paused the slideshow.

"What did you see?"

She pointed toward the background.

Behind the workers stood an enormous steel door built into the hillside.

It wasn't connected to the headquarters.

It was separate.

Almost hidden by temporary fencing.

The engineer enlarged the image.

Letters appeared above the entrance.

Only partially visible.

...17

Jonathan smiled faintly.

"That's it."

"The tunnel entrance."

Dr. Brooks immediately looked toward the detective.

"Can we identify its current location?"

The detective overlaid the old construction map onto the modern city survey.

The software processed thousands of reference points.

Several moments later...

A flashing marker appeared.

The room fell silent.

Anna frowned.

"That can't be right."

The detective looked confused.

"Why?"

She pointed to the address.

"The entrance is underneath..."

She stopped.

Everyone leaned closer.

The marker rested directly beneath a place every person in the room recognized.

The city's newest Education Resource Center.

A modern government building completed only six years earlier.

Mrs. Foster whispered,

"So they built another building..."

"...on top of it."

Jonathan nodded slowly.

"A perfect disguise."

No one would ever suspect an underground tunnel beneath a busy public office.

Just then, the lead forensic analyst looked up from his laptop.

"I've recovered another deleted file."

"What is it?"

"It's a visitor schedule."

The document listed dozens of dates.

Government officials.

Private consultants.

Education advisors.

Every visit had one destination.

B-17

Richard Carter looked puzzled.

"But the tunnel officially doesn't exist."

"Correct," replied the analyst.

"Which means every visit was intentionally hidden."

Anna slowly scanned the list.

One name immediately caught her attention.

Victor Langford.

Another.

Martin Graves.

Then...

A third name.

The room became completely silent.

Jonathan read it twice.

"No..."

Dr. Brooks looked over his shoulder.

Her expression changed instantly.

"What is it?"

Jonathan quietly turned the monitor toward her.

Among the secret visitors was someone neither of them expected.

The name belonged to a person who had publicly spent years exposing corruption in education.

A respected journalist.

An award-winning investigator.

Someone celebrated across the country for defending students.

Mrs. Foster whispered in disbelief,

"He was one of the good people..."

Jonathan slowly shook his head.

"Or..."

He looked at Anna.

"...someone wanted us to believe he was."

Before anyone could respond, one of the officers monitoring the building's security radio rushed into the room.

"Superintendent!"

Dr. Brooks turned immediately.

"What happened?"

The officer was breathing heavily.

"We've got movement."

"Where?"

"At the Education Resource Center."

The room froze.

"The building's been closed for hours."

The officer nodded.

"It was."

He looked directly at Jonathan.

"But security cameras just recorded three unidentified vehicles entering the underground service entrance."

Anna's eyes met her grandfather's.

They both reached the same conclusion at exactly the same moment.

Someone else...

Had just arrived at Tunnel B-17.

May you like

And if they were too late again...

Whatever had been hidden beneath the old headquarters for eleven years might disappear forever.
