Chapter 21: The Director Made the First Move

Chapter 21: The Director Made the First Move

No one inside the hidden office celebrated the discovery.

Finding the title Director did not bring them closer to the truth.

It proved only one thing.

Someone even more powerful than Black Owl still remained hidden.

Dr. Evelyn Brooks looked toward the forensic team.

"I want every communication leaving this room monitored."

The lead analyst nodded.

"We've already isolated the local network."

"What about external traffic?"

Another analyst looked uneasy.

"That's the problem."

He enlarged the network activity log.

"There isn't any."

Jonathan Vale frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Since the hidden office was discovered..."

"...not a single message has been sent."

Anna quietly looked at the monitor.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

"They don't need to send messages anymore."

The room fell silent.

Jonathan asked softly,

"Explain."

Anna pointed toward the final system log.

"The Director already received confirmation."

She highlighted the last command.

Await Director Confirmation

"The system wasn't waiting to send information."

She looked at everyone.

"It was waiting to receive instructions."

Several investigators exchanged worried glances.

The lead analyst immediately searched for incoming connections.

Nothing.

No emails.

No phone calls.

No remote login.

Then...

A tiny notification appeared in the corner of the screen.

Task Completed

The analyst froze.

"I didn't touch anything."

Another notification appeared.

Archive Closed

Then another.

Session Terminated

The computer wasn't receiving commands anymore.

It was following instructions that had already been scheduled.

Jonathan quietly nodded.

"They planned for failure."

Dr. Brooks immediately ordered,

"Disconnect every workstation from this system."

This time the analysts complied.

The countdown had already been disabled.

The evidence had been copied.

There was no longer a reason to remain connected.

As the final cable was removed...

Every monitor inside the hidden office suddenly went black.

At the exact same moment.

No warning.

No shutdown screen.

Just darkness.

The room became eerily quiet.

One investigator pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Another checked the server rack.

Every indicator light had gone out.

The forensic specialist looked confused.

"The electricity is still on."

He checked the breakers.

"No power failure."

Jonathan examined one of the machines.

"They've destroyed themselves."

The analyst nodded slowly.

"Every storage controller has been permanently overwritten."

Mrs. Foster stared in disbelief.

"But we already copied everything..."

The analyst smiled faintly.

"Thankfully."

Anna looked around the now lifeless office.

"It wasn't meant to stop us."

Everyone looked toward her.

"It was meant to erase their tracks."

Dr. Brooks nodded.

"And someone wanted to make sure nothing could be recovered after today."

Just then, a security officer hurried into the room.

"Superintendent."

"We've finished searching the maintenance tunnels."

"What did you find?"

"Someone escaped through them."

Jonathan asked,

"How long ago?"

The officer checked his notes.

"Approximately fifteen minutes before investigators reached the hidden office."

Anna immediately looked toward the timeline.

"That's impossible."

The officer frowned.

"Why?"

She pointed at the recovered system logs.

"The office was still active."

"The anonymous caller was speaking with us."

"The escape happened before that."

Silence.

Jonathan slowly understood.

"So the caller..."

"...was never inside this room."

Anna nodded.

"They wanted us to believe they were."

The investigators quickly reexamined the trace results.

The forensic specialist suddenly slapped the table.

"Of course."

"What?"

"The phone signal."

"It wasn't moving."

"Because it wasn't a phone."

Everyone stared.

He enlarged the technical report.

"The trace came from a signal repeater."

"A tiny relay device hidden somewhere inside the school."

Dr. Brooks crossed her arms.

"So the caller was somewhere else entirely."

"Exactly."

"They bounced the signal through the campus to mislead us."

Richard Carter shook his head.

"Whoever we're dealing with..."

"...planned every detail."

Jonathan looked toward Anna.

"What do you think they wanted most?"

Anna answered without hesitation.

"They wanted our attention."

She slowly walked back toward the desk where the framed photograph still rested.

"They kept giving us clues."

"Martin Graves."

"Black Owl."

"The hidden office."

"The Director."

She looked at Jonathan.

"They wanted us to keep chasing."

Mrs. Foster looked confused.

"But why?"

Anna picked up the photograph.

"Because while we were looking here..."

She paused.

"...something important was happening somewhere else."

Those words sent a chill through everyone in the room.

The lead investigator's secure radio suddenly crackled.

His face changed before he even spoke.

"Control to Investigation Team."

Dr. Brooks grabbed the radio.

"This is Brooks."

The dispatcher sounded breathless.

"Superintendent..."

"We've got an emergency."

"What happened?"

"There has been unauthorized access..."

He stopped for a moment as if trying to confirm what he was seeing.

"To what?"

"The district evidence vault."

Every investigator froze.

The dispatcher continued.

"The vault storing original bullying records from schools across the district..."

"...has just been broken into."

The hidden office fell completely silent.

Anna slowly closed her eyes.

She had been right.

The hidden office...

The anonymous calls...

The mysterious clues...

None of them had been the real objective.

They had all been a distraction.

And while everyone had been focused on one school...

Someone had made their move against the evidence that could expose an entire network.
