Chapter 1 - The Call That Changed Everything

Margaret Collins remained on the kitchen floor for nearly a full minute.
The cold ceramic tiles pressed against her palms while broken pieces of her glasses reflected the harsh fluorescent light above. Her cheek burned where her son's hand had struck her. She could still hear the faint clicking sound of Linda's nail polish brush moving across perfectly manicured fingers as though nothing unusual had happened.
Neither of them apologized.
Neither of them even looked concerned.
To them, an old woman crying on the floor had become ordinary.
Margaret slowly reached for the countertop and pulled herself to her feet. Her knees trembled violently, but years of arthritis had taught her how to hide pain.
She quietly picked up the broken frame of her glasses.
One lens had shattered completely.
Without another word, she walked out of the kitchen.
Behind her, she heard Linda laugh.
"I told you she'd make herself the victim again."
Her son, Daniel, answered with a dismissive sigh.
"Ignore her. She'll calm down in an hour like always."
Those words hurt more than the slap itself.
Fifteen years.
For fifteen years she had cooked every breakfast.
Prepared every dinner.
Paid utility bills whenever Daniel lost another job.
Babysat neighbors' children to earn extra money so the household could survive difficult months.
She had even sold the jewelry her late husband gave her to cover Daniel's gambling debts years earlier.
Not once had she reminded him.
Because she believed mothers sacrificed.
No matter what.
She entered her tiny bedroom, closed the door gently, and sat beside an old wooden dresser.
Inside the bottom drawer rested a faded leather folder.
She had not opened it for almost twelve years.
Her fingers hesitated before lifting the cover.
Inside lay photographs.
Official documents.
Bank statements.
Corporate seals.
And beneath everything...
An old silver cellphone.
Not a smartphone.
A secure satellite phone her husband had once insisted she keep.
"There may come a day," he had told her, "when everyone thinks you've lost everything. If that day ever comes...call this number before making any other decision."
Margaret had laughed back then.
She never imagined she would actually need it.
Today...
She believed that day had finally arrived.
She inserted the battery.
The screen slowly illuminated.
One number remained stored.
No name.
Only three letters.
"H.C."
Her thumb hovered above the green call button for several long seconds.
Outside, Daniel and Linda continued laughing while watching television.
Margaret pressed CALL.
The phone rang only once.
A calm male voice answered immediately.
"We've been waiting for your call, Mrs. Collins."
Margaret froze.
"You...expected me?"
"Yes."
Silence filled the room.
The man continued.
"Mr. Richard Collins instructed us twenty-three years ago that if this phone ever became active, we were to execute Protocol Ash immediately."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Her late husband's final plan...
Had never disappeared.
It had simply been waiting.
And somewhere far outside the city...

Several executives abruptly stood from a conference table after receiving the encrypted alert.
Protocol Ash had begun.
