Chapter 16 - Richard's Last Trap

As firefighters continued battling the inferno above, a heavy steel door slowly opened beneath the foundations of Collins Trust Headquarters.
No alarm sounded.
No lights flashed.
Everything operated exactly as Richard Collins had designed it twenty-five years earlier.
Deep underground, a secure archive awakened.
Rows of climate-controlled servers came online one after another.
Emergency generators hummed steadily.
Michael Carter watched through a remote security feed.
"He anticipated sabotage."
Rebecca stared at the monitor in disbelief.
"The fire wasn't supposed to destroy the evidence."
Michael nodded.
"It was supposed to trigger its release."
A digital countdown appeared across every monitor.
AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY SUCCESSION PROTOCOL
Five minutes remained.
Victor Hayes arrived moments later, covered in soot after escaping the burning building.
"Richard never told us about this room."
"He only told one person," Michael replied.
Everyone turned toward Margaret.
She quietly shook her head.
"He never showed me where it was."
"But he left you something else."
Michael handed her a sealed envelope recovered from the newly opened chamber.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Margaret,
If this letter reaches you, someone has attacked everything we spent our lives building.
Do not waste your strength protecting the guilty.
Protect the innocent.
And remember...
The greatest secret was never hidden in money.
It was hidden in people.
Margaret slowly folded the letter.
"The people..."
She whispered the words repeatedly.
Richard had rarely spoken in riddles.
If he wrote that sentence...
It meant someone important had never been identified.
At that moment another hidden compartment opened automatically.
Inside rested dozens of encrypted storage drives.
Each carried the name of a different person.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Consultants.
Security officers.
Only one compartment remained empty.
The engraved name beneath it read:
THOMAS KEENE.
Michael looked at Rebecca.
"He already removed his archive."
Rebecca's expression grew tense.
"So Thomas wasn't running away."
"No."
"He was trying to save something."
Somewhere outside the city...
A black sedan quietly entered an abandoned church parking lot.
A woman in her early fifties waited inside.
She checked her watch.
Thomas never arrived.
Instead...
A package was delivered anonymously.

Inside was a single blue notebook.
The Blue Ledger had found its next guardian.
