Chapter 18 - Linda's Secret Account

Detective Nolan requested permission to examine Linda's financial records.
Within hours the warrants were approved.
The results shocked everyone.
Rebecca projected the transaction history onto a conference room screen.
"These deposits don't match Daniel's gambling activity."
Michael folded his arms.
"Explain."
Rebecca enlarged several transfers.
"Every payment came from shell companies connected to Northbridge Consulting."
Edward frowned.
"The company Daniel controlled?"
Rebecca nodded.
"But Daniel wasn't receiving the largest payments."
She highlighted another account.
Account Holder:
Linda Harper.
Daniel stared at his wife.
"You told me there wasn't any money left."
Linda looked away.
The silence answered for her.
Detective Morris continued reviewing the records.
"There are seventeen international transfers."
Michael asked,
"Destination?"
"Cayman Islands."
Rebecca clicked another file.
"The account was opened six years ago."
Margaret slowly sat down.
Six years.
During those same six years Linda had repeatedly claimed the family couldn't afford Margaret's asthma medication.
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
"You stole from me?"
Linda laughed bitterly.
"You really think I was going to trust a gambling addict forever?"
The room exploded into shouting.
Detective Nolan ordered everyone to remain seated.
Linda looked directly at Margaret.
"I never cared about your money."
Margaret stared back calmly.
"I know."
Linda smiled coldly.
"I cared about Richard's secrets."
Michael immediately focused on her.
"What secrets?"
Linda shrugged.
"If I told you..."
"...I wouldn't survive the week."
Every person in the room understood.
Someone much larger than Daniel...
Much more dangerous than Linda...
May you like
Had been controlling events from the shadows.
And they were still watching.
