Chapter 26 - The Locked Grave

At sunrise, a court order authorized a forensic examination of Richard Collins' burial site.
The cemetery remained closed to the public.
Police secured every entrance.
Margaret stood silently before the marble headstone.
She had visited countless times over the years.
Never imagining another secret waited beneath it.
The cemetery director approached nervously.
"Mrs. Collins..."
"I never thought I'd witness this."
Margaret nodded softly.
"Neither did I."
Carefully, specialists removed the heavy stone cover.
Every movement was documented.
Edward held the court documents.
Rebecca monitored the chain of evidence.
When the casket finally became visible...
The forensic team stopped.
"The seal has been disturbed."
Michael looked up immediately.
"What?"
"The coffin was opened before."
Margaret stepped backward.
"That's impossible."
The lead examiner pointed toward tiny scratches around the lock.
"They're years old."
Not recent.
Someone had secretly opened Richard's grave long ago.
The casket itself remained intact.
Inside...
Richard's remains rested peacefully.
Around his neck hung the familiar silver chain Margaret remembered.
But the key...
Was gone.
Only the broken chain remained.
Father Benjamin slowly removed his hat.
"He found it."
Michael looked at him.
"Elias."
The priest nodded once.
"He came years before today."
Detective Nolan searched every inch of the coffin.
Nothing else appeared missing.
Except...
A folded piece of fabric beneath Richard's right hand.
Margaret carefully unfolded it.
It was part of an old map.
Only one corner survived.

Across the faded paper, Richard had written a single sentence.
If the third key is missing, follow the river.
