Chapter 13 - The First Vault

The staircase descended farther than anyone expected.

Concrete walls gave way to reinforced steel.

Old surveillance cameras slowly rotated back to life.

Emergency lights illuminated a long underground corridor.

Emily, Thomas, David, and several officers carefully moved forward while the remaining police secured the warehouse above.

Daniel remained handcuffed.

Dr. Ward had disappeared during the confusion.

Thomas examined the walls.

"This wasn't built by criminals."

"No," David replied.

"It was built by the government."

Emily looked around.

"You've been hiding this beneath the city?"

"For nearly thirty years."

At the end of the corridor stood an enormous circular vault door.

No keypad.

No handle.

Only a narrow slot exactly matching the brass key.

David looked toward Emily.

"It only opens for you."

She stared at him.

"Why me?"

"Because I planned for the day I couldn't come back."

Emily slowly inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

A deep metallic vibration echoed through the chamber.

The vault rotated open inch by inch.

Rows of fireproof cabinets stretched into darkness.

Shelves held thousands of documents.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Boxes marked with dates spanning decades.

Thomas whispered,

"My God..."

Emily walked inside.

Every cabinet carried a different family name.

Some belonged to politicians.

Others to judges.

Business executives.

Police commanders.

Each file documented years of corruption, hidden financial networks, and unexplained disappearances.

David watched quietly.

"This archive was never meant to expose one criminal."

Emily looked back at him.

"It exposes an entire system."

David nodded.

"And that is exactly why they never stopped hunting us."

Before anyone could examine another file, every monitor inside the vault suddenly switched on by themselves.
