Chapter 3 - The Hand That Rose

Rain intensified outside.
Water streaked across the windows until the city became nothing but blurred lights and shadows.
Inside the bus, every heartbeat seemed louder than the engine.
Daniel's patience finally disappeared.
"You embarrassed me."
Emily answered quietly.
"I told the truth."
His face twisted with anger.
"You ruined this family."
"No."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Your violence ruined it."
The words landed like gasoline on fire.
Daniel shoved the backpack off her shoulder.
Baby clothes scattered across the bus floor.
A tiny pair of white socks slid beneath a stranger's shoe.
Nobody moved to pick them up.
Emily bent instinctively.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
Pain flashed across her face.
"You're coming home."
"I'm never going back."
The construction worker standing nearby took one step forward.
Daniel immediately pointed at him.
"Stay out of this."
The worker hesitated.
Years later he would still remember that hesitation.
Emily suddenly pulled her arm free with surprising strength.
She stepped backward until her back touched the rear exit door.
"There is no home anymore."
Daniel's breathing became ragged.
His eyes no longer showed reason.
Only possession.
Only pride.
Only fury.
"You think you can leave me?"
"I already have."
The sentence echoed through the packed bus.
Something inside Daniel finally snapped.
His right fist slowly curled.
Every passenger saw it.
The nurse gasped.
The elderly woman covered her mouth.
Someone finally dialed emergency services.
Too late.
Daniel drew his arm backward.
Emily closed her eyes and wrapped both arms around her unborn baby.
The entire bus froze.
Everyone expected the punch.
Instead—
A powerful hand suddenly caught Daniel's wrist in midair with a sharp crack that echoed through the silent bus.
Daniel's fist stopped less than six inches from Emily's face.
His eyes widened.
"So," a calm unfamiliar voice said behind him.
"I finally found you."
Daniel struggled to turn.
The grip didn't move even a single inch.

For the first time since boarding the bus...
Fear appeared in his eyes.
