Chapter 2 - Every Eye Turned Away

The silence became unbearable.

Even the engine seemed quieter.

Daniel leaned forward until only inches separated his face from Emily's.

"You've been talking to someone."

"No."

"Your mother?"

"No."

"A lawyer?"

Emily refused to answer.

That silence angered him more than any insult could have.

He grabbed the support pole beside her, trapping her between his arm and the window.

Several passengers exchanged nervous glances.

The elderly woman finally whispered toward a young man beside her.

"Should somebody help?"

The young man swallowed hard.

"I... I don't know."

Another passenger quietly unlocked his phone.

Instead of dialing emergency services, he opened the camera.

Others soon followed.

Recording felt easier than intervening.

Emily noticed the glowing screens.

She wasn't angry.

Only disappointed.

Daniel noticed them too.

He actually smiled.

"Good."

He turned toward the cameras.

"Record everything."

Then he looked back at Emily.

"They'll see how unstable you are."

Emily's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I'm protecting my baby."

"You mean MY baby."

"Our child isn't property."

Daniel laughed again.

"Everything connected to you belongs to me."

A middle-aged nurse standing nearby could no longer stay silent.

"Sir."

Daniel slowly turned.

"You need to step back."

The nurse remained calm.

"She's pregnant."

"So?"

"You're frightening her."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"This is a family matter."

The nurse didn't move.

"No."

She folded her arms.

"This became everyone's business the moment you started threatening her."

For several seconds neither spoke.

Passengers secretly hoped the confrontation would end there.

Instead, Daniel took another step toward Emily.

She instinctively shielded her stomach.

The movement broke something inside the nurse.

She reached for the emergency stop button mounted beside the rear door.

Daniel noticed.

His voice exploded through the bus.

"Don't touch that!"

His shout startled everyone.

The driver glanced into the overhead mirror again.

Traffic prevented him from stopping immediately.

Emily whispered without looking away from Daniel.

"Please..."

The nurse answered softly.

"I won't leave you alone."

It was the first genuine promise anyone had made to Emily in years.

Daniel's breathing grew heavier.

His fists slowly tightened.

Every muscle in his body seemed to vibrate with barely controlled rage.

The bus continued moving through downtown traffic.

Each passing intersection felt like another minute trapped inside a cage.

No one yet understood how quickly everything was about to spiral beyond anyone's control.
