Chapter 16 - The Forgotten Tunnel

The narrow passage descended beneath layers of aging concrete, forcing everyone to move in single file.
Thomas carried the heavy metal case marked FOR MY DAUGHTER while two officers covered the rear. David led the way with surprising confidence despite the years he had spent away from these tunnels.
"They'll know this route," one officer whispered.
David nodded.
"They know the entrance."
"And the exit?"
"They know at least one."
Emily carefully followed behind her father. Hundreds of questions crowded her mind, yet none seemed as urgent as simply keeping up.
Water dripped steadily from rusted pipes overhead.
Old electrical cables hung loose along the walls.
Every few yards, faded emergency lights flickered weakly, powered by a backup system that somehow still survived.
Behind them came distant voices.
Not shouting.
Professional.
Measured.
"They're tracking us," Thomas said quietly.
"They expected us to run."
David stopped beside a steel maintenance hatch.
He pressed against a loose section of brick.
Hidden gears clicked.
A false wall slowly rotated, revealing another corridor extending in the opposite direction.
Emily stared.
"Another tunnel?"
"There are dozens."
Thomas looked impressed.
"Who built all this?"
David answered without slowing.
"People who never trusted official buildings to remain secure."
The group entered the hidden corridor just as flashlights swept across the passage they had abandoned moments earlier.
Several unidentified agents rushed past without noticing the concealed entrance.
Everyone remained perfectly still.
No one breathed.
After nearly a minute, the footsteps faded.
Emily finally exhaled.
"We lost them."
David's expression remained serious.
"No."
"They're too well trained to make the same mistake twice."
Thomas adjusted the weight of the metal case.
"What exactly is inside this?"
David glanced at Emily.
"I promised she would decide when the time came."
Emily looked down at the case.
For the first time, she noticed a second lock beneath the handle.
Instead of a keyhole, it contained a small circular glass sensor.
A biometric scanner.
David quietly said,
"It recognizes only one member of our family."
Emily looked back at him.
"You planned this before I was even born."
David lowered his eyes.
"I planned for the day someone would have to finish what I couldn't."
Far behind them, another metallic door slammed shut.
May you like
Someone else had entered the underground network.
And this time, they already knew which tunnel the group had chosen.
